Monroe County sheriff candidate calls plagiarism a 'mistake'
A candidate for Monroe County Sheriff admitted to copying parts of a speech from a sheriff candidate in Maryland.
Wes Revels, a candidate in the Aug. 14 Republican primary, said it was a mistake to copy sentences word-for-word from a website of Kevin Grubb, who ran for sheriff in Frederick County, Maryland in 2014. Revels used the material in his announcement speech April 5, and the speech was posted to his campaign website.
While doing research in preparation for this campaign, I gathered thoughts from sources that align with my beliefs, Revels said in a written statement. Whatever my intention was in drawing from other sources, using particular phrasing without altering it was a mistake. I am responsible for the materials used by my campaign. Its my fault. None of this diminishes the fact that I am the best candidate to serve as sheriff in Monroe County.
Grubb said he has never met Revels.
I wrote that while running for sheriff in 2014 and have never met or spoke to Mr. Revels, and he was not given permission to use the information from my website, Grubb said Friday.
