Madison rally to join with national movement calling out NRA
Hoping to build on the March for Our Lives rally in March, Madison-area high school students are taking on the nations largest and most influential gun rights group.
In conjunction with the national March on the NRA, student organizers are planning a march and rally on Aug. 4. The march is scheduled for 3 p.m., following the traditional Madison protest route from Library Mall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, up State Street to the state Capitol.
Were going to aim high, try to get as many people to come out as possible, said Sophie Guthier, a Madison Memorial senior who last year helped organize two school walkouts to protest gun violence. Were trying to get as much media coverage and social media out and get students to know whats happening.
Guthier has been working with Stephanie Trask from Memorial and Middleton Highs Max Prestigiacomo and other students to organize the protest, which aims to put pressure on state and federal lawmakers to enact gun control measures. The group is hoping to fund the event with T-shirt sales and a GoFundMe campaign. The money will go toward permits, sound equipment and promotional ads, Guthier said.
