Tommy Thompson, Who Fought GOP Efforts to Restrict UW's COVID Response, Is Stepping Down as System President

Interim University of Wisconsin President Tommy Thompson on Friday submitted his letter of resignation effective in March, a move that comes as the committee working to name a permanent leader prepares to select finalists for the position.

Thompson, a Republican and former four-term governor who took over as interim UW president in July 2020, notably fought off an attempt last year from GOP lawmakers to block the university system's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I'm not going to be intimidated," Thompson, the US health secretary under President George W. Bush, said last August. He frequently encouraged safety measures—including vaccinations—to guard against the spread of COVID-19 in order to return UW students and staff to in-person classes.

“Tommy Thompson was the right man at the right time," said University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents President Edmund Manydeeds in a statement. “His leadership has helped carry us through a pandemic and set the standard for managing during a crisis.”
