WI Senate Democratic leader announces campaign for Dane Co. executive
Wisconsin Senate Minority Leader Melissa Agard (D-Madison) announced Thursday that she will run for Dane County executive a decision that will leave Senate Democrats with a leadership opening and an open Senate seat.
Agards decision follows current Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announcement in October that he would be retiring next year after almost 13 years in the position. An election for the county leadership position will happen in November 2024.
Agard has served in the state Legislature since 2013 first in the state Assembly for eight years and then in the Senate for the last three years. Prior to that, Agard served on the Dane County Board of Supervisors.
It was a complicated decision to make, Agard said, but she realized that her public service started in Dane County and that reflecting on her service in the Legislature, she couldnt help but think about how important it is to have unapologetic, hardworking progressive values at the helm of the county the county that has provided me with so much. I was born and raised here. Im raising my own kids here.
