Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin is asking the state Supreme Court to consider whether the Wisconsin Constitution protects abortion rights.
RUTHIE HAUGE

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has filed a new lawsuit asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to declare that the state Constitution protects a right to an abortion.

The move came after the high court was recently asked to weigh whether an 1849 law thought by Republicans to ban abortion actually does so. A Dane County judge ruled against that interpretation and allowed abortions to resume in the state late last year.

But declaring abortion rights protected under the state Constitution could have far more sweeping effects, potentially limiting the ability of lawmakers to pass new restrictions on abortion and providing longer lasting safeguards.

In a video released Thursday morning, Tanya Atkinson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, said “Wisconsinites deserve the ability to make decisions that shape their future.”

“They deserve to know this right is protected by our state Constitution,” Atkinson said.

The move is the latest in a flurry of activity with the state Supreme Court, after the election of Justice Janet Protasiewicz last year gave liberal justices a 4-3 majority on the bench........................
