Once a GOP juggernaut, Waukesha County's shifting voters makes for Wisconsin battleground
WAUKESHA, Wis. ― Republican state Rep. Scott Allen stood at the entrance of the Waukesha Farmers Market on a September Saturday morning, sporting a University of Wisconsin Badgers hat and greeting each new arrival with an offer.
Would you like a Packers schedule?" the 58-year-old legislator running for his sixth term asked.
Just a few tents down from Allen, 35-year-old Alena Joling sharpened knives and scissors at her stand, and a little farther down the row, 65-year-old Patty Chones sat at her brother's Sweet Diamond Foods stand, where brats, hot sauce, spice blends and mustards were out for sale.
This was the scene in Waukesha County, where as recently as the 2000s and 2010s Republicans won statewide elections in Wisconsin in part by amassing lopsided majorities in the "crucial" county that could counter Democrats running up the score in liberal Dane and Milwaukee counties.
