WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) - An absentee ballot drop box that the mayor of a central Wisconsin city removed a week ago was back in place on Monday.
The Wausau city clerk said the box was available outside of city hall for residents to submit absentee ballots, payments, and other important city requests as was intended.
Mayor Doug Diny removed the drop box on Sept. 22 without consulting with the clerk, who has the authority under a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling legalizing drop boxes to make one available. They are not mandatory in the state.

(24,085 posts)And of course, the biggest charge of all, interfering w/ the rights of voters, and stealing their ballots perhaps ... how can anyone say that he didn't break into the ballot box and tamper w/ the ballots? I'd be very, very concerned that this piece of trash tampered w/ voter's ballots.

(7,185 posts)Mayor Dinky broke the law by taking the drop box. All election-related activities are under the purview of the municipal clerk.
As a poll worker in Wisconsin, I consider what the mayor did is wretched. Kudos to the clerk for handling this well!
These elections are hard enough for the clerks, election officials, and poll workers.
