Mail has slowed in Wisconsin. What does that mean for the election?

In the third quarter of 2024, 70% of two-day, first-class mail delivery was on time in Wisconsin. Only Georgia had a lower on-time delivery rate, and the performance in Wisconsin was well off the goal of a 93% on-time rate.

The data was roughly similar for slower first-class mail delivery. A separate Postal Service dataset shows that most mail reaches its destination only a day late, but that could be a critical delay for election mail.

Unlike other states, absentee ballots in Wisconsin must be delivered to a voter’s polling place by 8 p.m. on Election Day. There is no wiggle room for late ballots to be counted.

U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told a House committee on Sept. 26 that voters can “absolutely” trust their ballot to get where it needs to go on time. He had previously pledged a “heroic” effort on election mail.

Wife and I have voted by Absentee ballot since the start of Covid, but now with the terrible mail service here in SouthWest Wisconsin we've decided to brave it and vote in person. Also don't trust the drop box here so in person for us.

If the election office sent you a vote by mail ballot, you may to need to take it with you to vote in person
