Brad Schimel Called "Pro-Choice" a "Sham," Questioned Others' "Faith in Christ" in 2018
Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Brad Schimel made past remarks on abortion and faith, raising questions about his ability to rule impartially on reproductive health issues. At a 2018 Republican Party of Wisconsin prayer breakfast, Schimel, then serving as the state’s attorney general, dismissed the "pro-choice" label as a “sham” and suggested that abortion and Catholicism and faith in Christ are irreconcilable:
“I don’t know how you can reconcile a faith in Christ with abortion. There is no way that works.
Schimel's comment questioning the legitimacy of people's faith who support a pro-choice position, potentially spurring potential voters. Schimel's comments also could end up energizing others who see Schimel's comments as an attack on their faith.
Schimel also took a dismissive stance toward his opponent in that election, saying he expected her to play the "woman card” in the debate by bringing up abortion and defended his anti-abortion stance by saying he was “not ashamed to be pro-life.” Schimel also praised National Right to Life Committee, a group that seeks to criminalize abortion and has advocated for forced pregnancies of child rape victims.
