Wisconsin Supreme Court race sees millions in untrackable spending
The high-profile race to determine control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court has seen a sharp rise in spending by groups that aren’t required to disclose fundraising activities to state watchdogs.
The groups have collectively spent over $26 million this year, according to a Cap Times analysis of Wisconsin Ethics Commission filings. That total is over four times as much as in the 2023 election cycle.
The money includes over $16 million in spending by groups affiliated with tech mogul Elon Musk in support of Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Brad Schimel, as well as millions of dollars from other groups backing Schimel or Dane County Circuit Court Judge Susan Crawford.
The race has prompted a record-setting flood of spending in the run up to the April 1 election that has surpassed the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court race, which itself was a record for American judicial elections.
