Wyoming will consider tolls on Interstate 80

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming officials hope to study tolls as a means of improving and maintaining Interstate 80.

The Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reports that the Joint Transportation, Highways and Military Affairs Committee named a study of I-80 tolling among its top priorities before the next legislative session.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation has studied the possibility in 2008 and 2009 but no action has been taken.

Some worry, though, that a tax would push drivers to find alternate routes and hurt gas stations and other businesses that depend on out-of-state traffic.

Like what? I just wish that I didn't need so many transponders. Can't we have a universal transponder?

States received Grants for their part and were rewarded with increased commerce, tourism, taxes generated along routes, and many other benefits.
Putting up a toll booth would be highway robbery and they should lose other federal monies as a result.

to get around the Interstate, just depends on how much you like to drive and how big your gas tank is.

Other than I-80 virtually nothing takes anything like a direct, east-west route and all of them involve more terrain. One does avoid the soul-destroying boredom* of the interstate however.

*assuming no blizzards/windstorms

when traveling from Boulder to SLC or ID, I always opt for US 40. Don't care if it's farther,* I can stay awake.

*not even sure it is more taxing, even in the winter, given the wind. My granddaddy always used to say that not a lot of snow fell in Wyoming, but a lot blew through there.

it fits just about anywhere out here, I say as I look at the 35mph sustained winds outside my window. At least the sun is out and is is above freezing!

get all those mining operations and gas outfits to chip in some of their big bucks to help maintain a road they help wear out transporting all the stuff the do. Yes, I know they have rail too but it's only a portion of it.
