Train derailment near Bill temporarily closes rail lines

Six loaded Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway coal cars derailed on Sunday near Bill on Wyoming Highway 59 between Douglas and Reno Junction, according to a Wyoming Department of Transportation incident report.

The reason for the derailment is still unknown and remains under investigation, according to Maia LaSalle, the company’s public affairs director for Wyoming. No one was injured in the derailing.

Depending on the origin and destination of an incoming train, the company will utilize other tracks until the main lines are returned to full service. Main line 1 was cleared and opened Monday afternoon, according to LaSalle.

Main line 2 was opened after midnight Tuesday and main line 3 was expected to reopen Tuesday evening.
