Labor's Anne Aly claims victory in Cowan after vote count correction (First Female Muslim MP)

"Labor has claimed victory in the marginal WA seat of Cowan after candidate Anne Aly received the bulk of preferences from about 200 Greens votes incorrectly sorted into incumbent MP Luke Simpkins' pile.

"Dr Aly's buffer increased to 786, making it almost impossible for Mr Simpkins to hold on to his seat, with about 10,000 mainly absentee votes still to be counted."

What is particularly notable is that Anne Aly will become Australia's first female Muslim MP (Labor's Ed Husic is already an MP, and a very popular one).

Dr Aly, a world-renowned expert on deradicalisation, also came in for some thinly disguised racist attacks from Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, and the Libs' Michael Keenan during the campaign in an attempt to stigmatise her as supporting radical jihadists.
