"Do they think it's better to stick our heads in the sand than plan for a future that's clearly going to be different from our past? Do they really think that that's in the best interest of Canadians and, especially, working Canadians?" McGowan asked.
Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan said Conservatives are trying to tap into the frustration of fossil fuel workers who may feel left out of a changing economy.
O'Regan said the government's two pieces of legislation are an attempt to ensure workers don't get left behind. They do not call for the phasing out of Canada's fossil fuel sector. The sustainable jobs act (Bill C-50) specifically creates an independent body with members from Indigenous organizations, industry and labour to advise the government on how to support workers and their communities in a net-zero economy.
"[Poilievre is] counting on them being marginalized and banking on that fear. That's what this is about. Keep workers out of this process, make them feel that they are on the margins, and then you just farm that rage," O'Regan said.

(11,917 posts)The amount of workers in the oil and gas sector has been shrinking for years. It is not a large part of the population. They are mostly red neck conservatives anyway so not like the are gaining any voters. Sounds like he wants a Trump like goon cult.

(11,917 posts)but watched him this morning in a press briefing or something and my immediate reaction was that he reminded me so much of Pierre Poilievre. Not just the glasses (although Poilievre has ditched his for contacts lately) but the fast talking, blame everything on the other side. This SOTH blames democrats for everything and Poilievre blames Trudeau for everything and I mean everything. He cannot go a sentence without bringing Trudeau's name into it. I trust neither of them.

(123,188 posts)others do not doesn't happen all the time in Government. He is building upon the politics of resentment that has worked so well for conservatives in Alberta and in the US.
As to the new Speaker, I have not seen the man live but boy is he concerned about gay people having sex.

(123,188 posts)about this new guy and that. It has been on my mind because of Hamas terrorism but I think it applies to some in the Republican Party too. He seems to have just bashed and bashed and bashed people outside of the Bible. I think I'll call him Bam Bam.

His Israel funding gambit to increase the deficit by reducing IRS investigations was layed bare. Then he gaslighted when that was pointed out to him. Was that him gaslighting? Or is he a vessel. He is not a real Christian. That will help Democrats because he doesn't have the Trump charisma to sell **** sandwiches to the American public and get away with it.

So in Speaker Johnson we have a man whose Christian worldview has led him into a hall of mirrorshistorically, scientifically, legally, and constitutionally. A rule-of-law guy who laments a lack of absolute standards of right and wrong was a key participant in undermining the rule of law and has been a steadfast defender of Donald Trump, who has done so much to shatter absolute standards of right and wrong.
From what I can tell, Mike Johnsonunlike, say, Kevin McCarthy and Elise Stefanik, or J. D. Vance and Lindsey Grahamis not cynical; he seems to be a true believer, and a zealot. A polite and mild-mannered zealot, to be sure, especially by MAGA standards, but a zealot nonetheless. And what makes this doubly painful for many of us is that he uses his Christian faith to sacralize his fanaticism and assault on truth. I cant help thinking this isnt quite what Jesus had in mind.
