Former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi announces bid for Alberta NDP leadership

Former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi confirmed Monday he will seek the leadership of Alberta's New Democrats, changing the trajectory of the race to replace Rachel Notley.

In an interview with CBC News on Monday, Nenshi said he was entering the race based on his concerns that the governing United Conservative Party is "not only incompetent, but they're actually immoral and they're dangerous."

He said too many Albertans can't find doctors, classrooms are overcrowded, and suggested the UCP can only "pick fights and waste money."

"They punch down on the vulnerable and they've left us completely unprepared for a world that is changing," he told the CBC's Scott Dippel in an interview.

I hope he wins the leadership. I think, under the current circumstances, he would be a formidable opponent to the Cons.

Don't know how the NDP could find a better successor to Rachel Notley.

Nenshi is plugged in and should be able to make lots of dents in Danielle Smith's "armor."

The NDP in Alberta are, and have to be, more center left than they do elsewhere given we are Texas North here. Nenshi is well-liked and known Province-wide, known for getting things done and has run good campaigns in the past when he won three terms as Calgary's Mayor before he retired.

overwhelming amount of dumb fecks here. I was so happy when he became our Mayor and kept on supporting him each term after. I would absolutely go with him if he won.

I noticed Jann Arden (my wife and I are both big fans) expressed support for Nenshi on Twitter the other day. The bashing that followed from right-wing twits was relentless. Morons!
