The federal government says it is investigating claims that dozens of Canadian oilsands workers in Alberta were laid off and replaced with temporary foreign workers.
More than 60 ironworkers say they were let go from their jobs at the Kearl Mine, north of Fort McMurray, last week.
Vic Nilson, who worked at the plant since June, said he and his colleague were told to leave last week with no word as to why.
Pacer Corporation, an associated company, responded to CBC News saying that all its employees are Canadian, but following the announcement that the federal government would be looking into allegations made by the Ironworkers, the company changed it official statement to no comment.

(8,646 posts)A friend of mine who is an electrician said that in his union he has a bunch of guys ready to work in Fort Mac, but the oil companies are hiring cheap overseas workers. That was awhile ago actually...in the last few years. It's definitely a trend. Whenever they talk about 'no qualified workers' they are lying. What they really mean is 'no qualified workers willing to work for peanuts.'

(4,314 posts)Harper is not loved anymore. Canadians hate him. His party will not be voted in next election. I just hope he does not destroy Canada before that.

(5,604 posts)I expect them to start getting sloppy covering up their corruption as they try to finish their agenda of Tar sands expansion, union busting, CBC/Canada Post privatization, entrenched surveillance/police state, destroying research, CETA ratification/TPP.
I give the odds of a Reichstag Fire event occurring on the hill as 50/50 within a year.
The Kearl Oil Sands project, located 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray and jointly owned by Imperial (71 percent) and ExxonMobil Canada (29 percent), is one of Canadas highest-quality oil sands deposits. It has an estimated 4.6 billion barrels of recoverable bitumen resource, which will help meet North Americas energy needs for the next 40 years.

Who would have thought that Mr. Clean himself was the Kearl operator?
May be time for everyone to trend to the peoples' company. Or what is left of it.

(8,646 posts)The employees have all been rehired. Company says it was a mistake, temp workers were supposed to fill empty jobs, not jobs already filled. suuuuuurrrrreee we believe that.

(20,582 posts)with a large oil trucking company. I would guess that probably at least 1/3 of the employees trained and hired over the last few years have been foreign workers. They're great people! and I'm happy for them, because I see them all the time sending money home at the post office, but I doubt they're getting full-time or the benefits the other workers do. And ..... there are unemployed here who would love these jobs.
It's frustrating.

(9,223 posts)I sense that the tide has turned. The unions see what the TFW's program has become. It has become a union busting program. And the next election will put some Alberta ridings into play!
