Protesters assault officers during operation to end Ottawa occupation, police say

Police officers say they are being assaulted — and facing attempts by protesters to disarm them — as they try to end the three-week occupation in downtown Ottawa.

Police were seen Friday moving along Colonel By Drive, Sussex Drive, Mackenzie Avenue and Rideau and Wellington streets in "public order units" arresting protesters and towing vehicles.

At a news conference Friday afternoon, Interim Ottawa police Chief Steve Bell credited the federal Emergencies Act, Ontario state of emergency and local state of emergency and injunction for providing tools to help officers deal with protesters.

Then in a tweet issued Friday evening, Ottawa police said officers were being assaulted as they tried to dismantle the occupation, as well as dealing with attempts by protesters to take officers' weapons.

The only ones that may not are the ones from Alberta who had plans to murder RCMP officers. It seems the only time bail is denied is if they are seen to be dangerous beyond the charges they have or are seen as a flight risk.

I often shake my head at some of the decisions re bail.

so they don't clog our courts with bail hearings.

I see Barber has some good conditions attached to his bail. He must leave Ottawa within 24 hours and Ontario by Wednesday. He also is not to support the protest in any way: no money, no tweets, no verbal support at all. If he breaches any of these conditions it will be his wife that will be held responsible financially if he breaches his conditions as she is acting as his surety.

the treatment of First Nations who protest on their own property was vastly different than how these violent ones up until late last week.

When everyone is treated the same when the law is broken then we might say lessons have been learned.

"When this crisis is over, all of us will need to work hard to heal our country," Freeland told the news conference.

"But today, our economy and our democracy are facing a serious and foreign-funded threat. These illegal blockades and occupation cannot be allowed to usurp the authority of democratically elected governments."
