Information Commissioners Office looking at Tory use of call centres in election

After Channel 4's expose of Tory law-breaking in 2015, here's this year's skullduggery

Revealed: Inside the secretive Tory election call centre

The investigation has uncovered what appear to be underhand and potentially unlawful practices at the centre, in calls made on behalf of the Conservative Party. These allegations include:

● Paid canvassing on behalf of Conservative election candidates – banned under election law.

● Political cold calling to prohibited numbers

● Misleading calls claiming to be from an ‘independent market research company’ which does not apparently exist

A spokesperson for the ICO said they intend to ask the Conservative Party ‘about the marketing campaigns conducted from this call centre’ and told Channel 4 News:

Suffice to say that that I hung up on the all.

I'm not at all convinced about call centre electioneering. If anything I am more likely not tell somebody cold calling me on the telephone to get stuffed.

Going door to door with leaflets may be old fashioned, but I still think it's the best way forward for political parties seeking elections.
