UK leader warns Brexit may never happen unless deal approved

By JILL LAWLESS
March 8, 2019

LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Theresa May tried to pressure U.K. lawmakers Friday to support her Brexit deal, warning that Britain may never leave the European Union if they vote down the agreement next week.

Battling to stave off a second defeat for the unpopular deal, May also implored the EU to help her make “one more push” to get the agreement through a skeptical Parliament.

British lawmakers are due to vote for a second time Tuesday on the deal, which they overwhelmingly rejected in January. If Parliament throws out the deal again, lawmakers will vote on whether to leave the EU without an agreement — an idea likely to be rejected — or to ask the EU to delay Brexit beyond the scheduled March 29 departure date.

“Back it and the U.K. will leave the European Union,” May said. “Reject it and no one knows what will happen.”

In a speech to factory workers in the staunchly pro-Brexit northern England port town of Grimsby, May said a delay could lead to “more months and years arguing” over Britain’s departure from the EU.

FFS, the people she needs to be pressuring are in the UK Parliament.

The EU agreed the withdrawal terms with May, including the NI "backstop" that was her idea in the first place, and managed to wrangle 27 EU leaders to support it.

This is just more empty posturing and game-playing in an effort to paint the EU as the intractable force in this debacle.

Right now, it's understandable if the EU just wants shot of us ASAP since our government's in such a state. Can you imagine if the UK was seeking first-time accession to the EU amid all this shambles? It'd be a non-starter.

Hell, I don't want to be part of a club that includes the current UK Parliament!

.....that's it's her deal or leaving the EU with no deal. Both sides see her telling the other lot the opposite of what she's told them and then conclude that she's bluffing.

Very difficult to negotiate with the EU when you can't negotiate with your own countries politicians!
