The government knows its plans for Voter ID will disenfranchise millions - that's the whole point

The Tories have taken a leaf out of the US Republican Party’s playbook to rig the system in their own favour

Over and over again, Boris Johnson’s government has failed to give weight to facts and evidence. Now, less than two years after coming into office, the disregard could result in millions of marginalised people losing their ability to vote in a country that prides itself as being the “mother of parliaments”.

The government’s Elections Bill, which is undergoing its second reading in the House of Commons, will require individuals to show photographic ID for UK Parliamentary elections in Great Britain, local elections in England, and Police and Crime Commissioner elections in England and Wales.

It’s a measure the government says is required to stop voter fraud in UK elections and to preserve the integrity of our democratic processes. Yet far from protecting the integrity of our elections, the proposals will instead achieve the exact opposite, disenfranchising millions of people to the point where it harms the very system it purports to protect.
