Instead of US President/Vice President.
Sherrod Brown(D-OH) has announced that he is not running for President and is focusing on his US Senate career. If Sherrod Brown left the US Senate to become President or Vice President, his US Senate seat will go to a Conservative Republican who win in the 2022 special election.
John Hickenlooper(D-CO) has an easier chance of becoming the next US Senator from CO than the next President of the United States. If Hickenlooper runs for the US Senate, he will easily win the Democratic Nomination due to high name recognition and win the November General Election against Cory Gardner-R. Hickenlooper can save the DSCC alot of money trying to win back the CO US Senate seat with mediocre candidates. DSCC can spend money in other US Senate Races- protecting Jones(AL) unseating McSally(AZ), Perdue(GA),Ernst(IA),McConnell(KY), Collins(ME), Tillis(NC) and Cornyn(TX). Hickenlooper can resign from the US Senate in 2022 allowing Governor Polis to appoint Hickenlooper's replacement who can run and win in the 2022 special election. Polis,Bennet, and the other CO Democratic statewide elected officials will also be up for re-election in 2022.

(8,617 posts)Governor Polis can appoint a progressive Democrat to Hickenlooper's US Senate seat. Whoever Polis appoints to the US Senate will have to run in the 2022 special election. Every current CO Democratic statewide elected official including Polis and Bennet are up for re-election in 2022 and they are favored to win re-election in 2022.

(38,958 posts)may make that decision for some of the candidates as we have seen with Sherrod Brown. I am sure that many are looking to get into the Presidential run, but after a few phone calls and discussions choose other paths for their political careers. It is still very, very early and some are simply running to build name recognition or hoping for a VP slot.
