What does everyone think of Former RI Governor Edward DiPrete?

DiPrete lost re-election in 1990 by a 50 percent margin and then in 1994 was arrested and convicted of corruption charges. Did RI voters knew DiPrete was corrupt more than 5 years before he was arrested?

Rhode Island is a small place and when I lived there pretty much everyone knew who the gangsters and corrupt politicians were. However, corruption was not necessarily a disqualifying quality for a politician, the best example being Buddy Cianci, "The Prince of Providence." Buddy was extremely beloved for all of the good he did for ordinary people even though he was a Republican and corrupt. So, my best guess is that the people of RI did know DiPrete was corrupt.

Does anyone else here know who this man was?
