Related: About this forumI think polls in all states should open at 6am and close9pm like we do in NY.
Working people could get to the polls then.

(1,721 posts)Let's face it, Americans are often working 2 jobs, commuting a great deal, and working split and overnight shifts.

(195 posts)as someone who works at the polls, that's a really, really long day. Our polls are open 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., but we have to arrive around 6 a.m. and we rarely leave before 9 p.m. - I don't know how you folks in NY manage even longer days! In our state, we're not permitted to leave the polling place for any reason from the time it opens until the last vote is counted. I'm all for extending the hours, but some sort of accommodation should be made for the workers, perhaps allow us to work half a day. There are times when we won't have a voter show up for hours, usually mid-afternoon, and no matter how many books, crossword puzzles, or knitting we bring it is sooo hard to stay awake when all you can do is sit.
Maybe what we should do is hold voting on the weekend. Oh wait, that makes too much sense.
