...nor direct the efforts of anyone skilled enough to pull it off. If there were shenanigans, it was a third party who benefits from Trump going in.

even people at companies that work for Elon ( Starlink, SpaceX, Tesla, and Xshitter ) all have people that COULD hack an election. I've met a few from each of those companies, usually interviewing for jobs at my company.

However, I doubt Eloon did anything... if he did hire people to do the hack, it would have to be more than a few... and keeping such a secret is very hard. OTOH... however Russia and China and possibly North Korea have the talent and the ability to keep a secret, usually through harsh treatment of people that talk and the intimidation that comes with that.

I never thought for a minute trump won all the swing states.

And it's a frightening thought as that means they've figured out how to never lose an election again if the dictator decides to stage one.

He's good at personal myth-making, taking credit for other people's work, and getting people to do his dirty work. I've seen his company announcements and internal memos sent to the technical staff, and if I were a dev there, my eyeballs would've long since been permanently rolled up inside my head. I've worked with big full of shit talkers like that. 🙄

I agree with you about AI not being needed to fuck with voting machines. It's not really suited to the task.

If something happened, I think it was either a state actor or international organized crime, and definitely not people likely to be chatty about it.

I know most of you don't actually know what a generative AI actually does... and that it is the now a buzzword and seems magical. It isn't. and you wouldn't need one to write such software. Nor would you need ( or want ) the internet to deliver said hacks to voting machines or tabulating machines. Could an AI help... maybe. But you certainly don't need it. AI is great at regurgitating what it has previously seen... and making associations between things it has "learned" about. Think of it as a "google search" on steroids, where it has found bits and pieces of items that might be related and puts them together. Hence the term Large Language Model or LLM. Give it enough data to relate... and describe how to form the relationships, and it will create tokens or phrases that match the desired relationship goal.

I asked an AI to rewrite a scene from Hillbilly Elegy in the style of Hemingway. The resulting few paragraphs were astoundingly good. But it had a lot of material to work with. Nothing really magical.

Musk did not need to hack computers or "use AI" to interfere with the election. He just flooded the media zone in Pennsylvania and other battleground states with a lot targeted and smartly crafted media buys and this altered perceptions. Apparently $250 million dollars can buy you the U.S. government. One day Elon Musk might find to his regret that the U.S. government actually belongs to the American people, and not to the highest bidder.
