Is a real bargain. They are very responsive and seem to stay on top of new threats.

I don't like paying for things I don't need but I don't begrudge malwarebytes that amount of money...?.

as I understand it, the paid version includes "live" protection, other stuff. I never used the MBAM pro and only use online scanners like Eset or Kaspersky from time to time, no real-time protection for me... I make regular backups just in case.

One that gets good reviews is Emsisoft Anti-Malware https://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/
Similar to MBAM there's a free (on demand) & Pro version (Real-Time, Online)

Read some good revues for Zemana Antimalware https://www.zemana.com/?__c=1
I'm not familiar with the product, it's on my to-do test list.

HitMan Pro gets good revues also: https://www.hitmanpro.com/downloads.aspx

It's got its annoyances, but it's been pretty good for me as a first line of defense. Combined with Ad-block Plus on Firefox, I haven't had any serious infections in many years.

If what you say is true about Malwarebytes, that's disappointing since I've often used it as my backup.

On edit, one caveat: I'm not a heavy net surfer, especially to risky sites. YMMV.

Ends midnight 7/02/17

Zemana AntiMalware serves double-duty. It’s a PC cleaner and at the same time, it protects your computer from various threats like malware and viruses.

It cleans up your PC in a just matter of minutes. It blocks not just viruses, but also other potential threats such as malware, trojans, root-kits, ransomware, boot-kits and zero day malware in real time.

It also helps improve your online experience by removing all the annoying pop-ups and annoying toolbars from your browser, the kind that often come preloaded with unwanted download and upgrades.

Not only that, Zemana AntiMalware uses Pandora Real Time Sandbox Technology to detect and eliminate threats, which leaves zero-day malware power-less. As for the program’s functionality, Zemana AntiMalware comes packaged in one of the lightest-weight file sizes at this level of protection, using only 5MB of disk space.

I use the paid versions of Malwarebytes and Bitdefender. I use the computer for my business, and it's not worth the risk of a free version missing something or providing fewer features (even if I don't use those extra features often). I also run the free version of Super AntiSpyware now and then, and it hasn't picked up anything that Bitdefender might have missed.
