A couple days ago I got a notice for Windows 10 update.

It warned that the update would take longer than usual. So I scheduled it for 3:00 the following morning thinking it would be completed by the time I got up. That was yesterday morning. My computer has been stuck on a dark blue screen with the circling white dots ever since I got up yesterday.

I've googled it and it appears to have happened to a lot of folks but they all seem to have a way out with something other than just a dark screen to work with. I've tried ctrl alt delete and escape. I think there's an F key that might help but I can't remember which one. I guess I could try them all but I'm not sure that's such a good idea. The only other thing I can think to do at this point is a forced stop.

If anyone has an idea or knows something about this I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks!

At some point, it will attempt to do this long update again. Make sure it has a good internet connection to do this.

(Your internet probably went out during this update.)

I upgraded all of my computers to Win 10.

After a few months, one by one, I put them back to Win 8.1.

Windows 10 is designed to be better for Microsoft, not its users.

Some things about 10 are better than 8, but its not worth this kind of grief.

After years of fast, reliable, internet I moved to a location where I'm stuck with Spectrum (Time Warner). My wireless connection is sketchy at best.

I Googled it on my phone and ended up doing a hard reboot. When I turned my laptop back on, it resumed the backup from the place it started spooling with no other issues. It just took too freaking long.

Why the heck can't MS get this right without creating such issues?

to finally just force it off. When I powered on it went straight to the point where it had stalled. It took less than 10 minutes to complete the update and I am now fully operational.

Office 365. I spent Friday cleaning and re-installing to no avail. 2 hours on chat with technical help. Call-back scheduled for Saturday evening. Saturday morning I reformatted and bought Windows 10 Pro. About an hour before my session with the Answer Desk I got Office 365 to work. Everything else re-installed today and set up.

So, after reading the replies here I finally just turned my computer off and then turned it back on. It went straight to the place where the update had stalled and finished in a matter of minutes.

Once again DUers have saved the day!!

Congratulations, but listen, the best thing is to NOT update to a new OS over an existing OS but rather get a computer with the OS you want.

I know this is highly impractical financially and physically for many, including myself, I still use Widows 8.1 and will not update to Windows 10 on my computer. I will wait until I can afford a computer with Windows 10 (or whatever OS is the latest at that time).

I got this advice from an IT professional who runs an IT/Cybersecurity school.
