I use uBlock Origin. The software's developer very explicitly wants it to be free. It's a political statement.

This is uBlock's manifesto

The user decides what web content is acceptable or not in their browser.
The uBlock project does not support Adblock Plus' "Acceptable Ads Manifesto", because the "Acceptable Ads" marketing campaign is really the business plan of a for-profit entity.

Users are best placed to know what is or is not acceptable to them. uBlock's sole purpose is to give users the means to enforce their own choices.

There are sites I subscribe to so I don't have to see ads. For example, Democraticunderground.

There are sites I don't block ads on because I find their advertising interesting and well focused. These are mainly technical sites.

And there are sites I block entirely because I find their advertising offensive.

I feel the same about television. I don't watch any cable, satellite, or broadcast television so I never see television ads.

Netflix has no ads. It's $8.99 a month. Between that and Redbox I never run out of interesting television.

I have ZERO tolerance for any ads that move or make noise. uBlock Origin helps me avoid that crap and it's free. What's wrong with that?

I think it was the wording of the OP that rubbed me wrong. I am way too cranky these days.

My apologies to all involved.

And, no, I don't work for them or get paid by them! Just a happy, non-paying user

7. Links to Ublock Origin and Ublock Origin Extra....

Ublock Origin:

Ublock Origin Extra:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin-extra/pgdnlhfefecpicbbihgmbmffkjpaplco

Install Ublock Origin, then Ublock Origin Extra. They work together. Given that this would be new to you, you will not have to fiddle with settings.....they will work well upon installation, although as time passes you may learn to utilize some of the advanced features.

Edited to add: Ublock was bought by Adblock, and thus lets some ads through. Ublock Origin is the new default and works perfectly. Don't install Ublock.

... one called "CCleaner" by Pitform (or something like that). It's free and works fine, for me.

8. Browser extensions...

Ublock Origin, Adblock Plus, Ghostery, Privacy Badger.

These are available for most browsers. It's ok to run more than one. I personally run all of them. Might need to disable for banking sites but you can set it to ignore certain sites very easily.

12. Which browser are you using?

If you use Firefox and add the NoScript extension (it's easy to get and install), not only will you never see another ad, but it blocks all Java, JavaScript, and Flash from running on your computer, unless you specifically allow it. Since computer nasties tend to infect through those means, it'll keep you safer, too.

Here's the link to read more, in case you're interested:

https://noscript.net/

Some sites will want to run as many as 30 (!) different scripts on their pages, most of which are ads and tracking, which, especially if you have an older computer, will really slow it down.

I can't praise NoScript enough. (You might have guessed that!) When I'm forced to use another browser that doesn't have it, I feel naked and vulnerable.
