Virus on my iMac desktop computer?

Has anyone heard of the Tapsnake virus on iMac's. I got a message from MacKeeper that it found this virus on my mac. I don't know anything about MacKeeper, whether it is for real, a scam or just a way to get info off my computer.
If anyone knows anything about the virus or MacKeeper, please share with me. I saved the MacKeeper file to the computer but have not installed it yet. I'm always nervous about installing new software. Obviously, I'm not very computer-savy so can use all the help I can get.
thanks

downloaded it so it was in the download window file. I tried to drag it to the trash but that didn't seem work, so I just cleared the entire download file. I then searched the hard drive for and it was on the hard drive somewhere, just the downloaded stuff, none of the actual installed stuff. I dragged the hard drive box to the trash and that seemed to removed it from the hard disk. I searched the hard drive again but didn't get any results. I'm trying to empty the trash now using secured empty, it seems to have frozen and is stuck about half way through the empty process. I can't figure out how to unfreeze it. I'll try to restart the computer and see what happens.

Thanks again.

and it works great for me. I like it most because it's easy to use and I can see what's going on with it.

a new google maps thing when I went to google maps for directions.

It looked like it was a Google app. Screwed up Dropbox and searching. Panicked when it showed up as malware" in a search.

After going to the Apple website, found it was an extension, easily removable.

Once got one of those pay or we take everything notices after I clicked on a garage sale image to use in a poster. More panic. NOTHING seemed to work, even a hard restart. Finally figured out to disconnect from WIfi, THEN restart. Gone.

Two Ultimately minor instances in one year after nothing but Apples since Netscape.

I won't install MacKeeper due to many cautions about it.
