I still have the G4 and can access it wirelessly if I still need any thing in it. I actually just need to dump everything and get rid if the G4.

You could designate it as your time machine or just do a conventional backup. Do it manually, file by file, or get a backup program.

Not to mention, using MA was a little like stealing my old Mac's soul. Kinda creepy, but damned awesome.

But, once it was all done, my new iMac and I bonded easily.

Life does go on.

It took me twelve years to max out my Mac-Enstein, named so after I replaced its G3 processor with a G4 six years ago. Over the years, I added a super drive, an internal hard drive, and a video card so that I could join the Flat Screen Society. And it was a DUer in this very group who directed me to a site where I could get an emulator for OSX. Otherwise, I truly would not be where I am today.

Even the thought of just putting it out with the garbage was so genuinely painful I made a copy of the rainbow Apple logo, attached it to my new refurbished Mac Mini, put the white logo sticker it came with on the Macenstein, and wrote an epitaph. It really did make me feel better -- an attempt to transfer its soul, you might say!

The Time Machine transfer from my 2GB 2005 model went as smoothly as glass -- though I did have to go on a DVI cable run! Not a spinning beach ball in sight!

Back up your old machine to an external hard drive, plug the hard drive into one of the Mini's USB drive, and ask Time Machine to "restore" everything you want to transfer. In less than an hour, you'll have everything you want.

I hooked the old machine to the new mini via Firewire, thinking i could use target disk mode. But they wanted to connect via wifi. SLOW! Estimated time was over 60 hours! But I have an external 2tb raid for Time Machine. Once I told the Mini to restore from Time Machine, things went smoothly.

And that was after transferring back and forth to a newer MBP, an external drive, back to mine, etc etc etc ...

Yours was probably less scary!
