(217 posts)I really like Linux Mint 15 Olivia, but upgrading to 16 will probably be worth it.
EDIT: Official release blog. http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2493

I'll be installing LM 16 this afternoon. They say it's faster than LM 15, which was plenty fast on my computer and worked beautifully.

(28,394 posts)It's been a couple of days and LM 16 Cinnamon is going great. I had to finagle around a lot getting Amazon streaming video and Netflix to work properly, but that's been true with other 13.10-based systems I've been trying out. LM 16 really is faster than previous releases. Very nice job by Clem and team.

(51,076 posts)I've not really tried KDE yet in any of the distros. Maybe its time I did
I've been a gnome2 guy since I made the switch to linux a few years back.

(28,394 posts)Working well, so far. I like it better than previous releases of LM KDE, but for KDE my preference is Netrunner, and I'll probably go back to that after the new one comes out. I like KDE for a change of scenery. It's just so pretty.

(56,582 posts)I've been pondering it; I kind of miss the old Gnome (I'm on Windowmaker here).
(Or does LM use cinnamon?)
Also, what's its init? I have no desire to go the systemd route...

(51,076 posts)I'm an old gnome2 user so I gravitate to Mate.
My problem with mint, as childest as it is, is the green color so I never stay with it very long. Right now I'm working on ubuntu 13.10 with Mate and so far I'm liking it ok. I'm been using 10.04 for so long but its getting mighty long of tooth and I'm wanting to upgrade to something better, faster more secure. Not that I'm having security issues just that I can't seem to get past firefox 20 and I'd like too keep up with the newer versions as they come out.
I started this venture by installing ubuntu 13.10 gnome and then adding Mate but that didn't work out as I couldn't get my sound to work at all so I reinstalled ubuntu 13.10 the version with unity and then added Mate and thats where I'm at now. I've gotten a couple error messages so far but I think I can get them worked out. At any rate I have my drive with 10.04.4 on and I can and do go back to it from time to time.
My old computer is a dell dimension 4700 with a three gig processor with two gigs ram with an added sound card and video card. One of these days I'm going to upgrade this but as long as this thing chugs along I'll probably stick with it.
No way would I consider going back to microshaft and their products.

And, hey, as far as I see it, we have an embarrassment of riches in the Linux/BSD community. I have one Slackware laptop (my main one), one Debian laptop, and one OpenBSD tower. Nothing's absolutely better; there's always the right open source solution for whatever you need.

(51,076 posts)and XFCE just doesn't do it for me.
I'm tried so many different flavors that I forget just what it is I tried and why I didn't like them. I'm sure you know the score on that

(56,582 posts)It's still my favorite desktop. Once you get used to it, it's IMO absolutely perfect for almost anything.

Also, I see Mint at least in the past had a Windowmaker edition. What's Mint's package manager? I'm sure they have Windowmaker available.

Why can't I get sound to work in 13.10 with mate?
Linux mint with mate is no problem, nor is Ubuntu 13.10 with unity? I don't understand
