Wordpress--- HEELLPPPP! Where can I find some good tutorials for this thing?

Having built some OK websites in the past using just HTML 5, I volunteered to take over a church's website when the person who set it up disappeared.

Said person left no notes, but did leave a huge pile of dead links and other problems that I am clueless to deal with. Can't even access the homepage to update it. A couple of other people who have used Wordpress haven't done any better than I have.

(Here is where I would normally digress to a rant about how all web designers should be shot and we start again from scratch-- but since I'm asking for help from such people, I'll calm down. For now.)

I was withing 5 minutes of transferring the domain and using it with HostGator, starting from scratch, but was talked out of it because "Wordpress is just so much better." Besides, a few people know a little about it and could help work with it if we could get in there to do anything. And since it's a UU church and UU central loves Wordpress, and we get a free website out of it, changing isn't the best idea. (UU central, however doesn't love it enough to give us classes or send an expert to help)

So, since the included help has been useless so far, where can I go to learn about this monster? Mainly-- how can I wipe out most of it and redo the whole thing?

Didn't make a lot sense so I retreated to Dreamweaver and gave Muse a try (It's good but Adobe is not going to support it after this year).

https://codex.wordpress.org is damn useful.

One reason so many people love wordpress is that it’s very easy to export into a different program if you ever choose to do so.

The person who gave you this problem needs to give you admin status so you can make the changes you want.

I have a bunch of notes from classes I’ve taken. I’m not the best note taker but you can have them if you think it might help.

That part isn’t really an ‘erase and start over’-able thing, but each link must be redirected or you end up with a lot of 404 pages. That sinks your google search engine optimization ranking, really not good.

I scrolled down the navigation bar on the left to Tools, then to Redirection. Looks like this shouldn’t be too bad.

I had to do it using excel. This looks much simpler.

Hope it helps, but it won’t unless you get access to the page. Good luck!

It's a big pain. I was just TODAY searching in my Dashboard for a page I can access from the URL (like I'm just a browser), but cannot find to modify. It's not on the list of pages or posts. This would not happen with plain old HTML sites.

I am threatening to go back to using good old Front Page and an FTP uploader.

You could copy each page (just, you know, from the URL), and paste it into a Squarespace or Front Page site, and modify it from there.

Or you could just go with a minimal Wordpress site. It will do everything you want, but perhaps in a more complex way.

It is what you make of it, and that goes for anything. Personally I prefer Drupal, but WP can be good if set up intelligently.

If so, give me a shout and I will be glad to lend a hand.

For what the person wrote, this is a slam dunk no brainer. And yes, WP is lightyears ahead of HTML and I have coded in both. There are simply mountains of options you can do in WP you could never do with HTML, but I digress.

Anyway, the short of it is, download, install, create.

If you need help, reach out to me and I will give you a hand.

Respectfully, Mike
