Forty years ago the Clean Air Act passed the Senate with a 100% vote. It passed the House 375-1. This was under a Republican president. The act was strengthened under the next GOP president.

What happened GOP, you have so lost your way. You have become blinded with power and greed. With your inexplicable hatred of this President, you have lost your moral compass. That's just sad.

Cha it was an amazing speech. We can build on his words, to give our children and future generations a brighter and safer world. It can happen. I have faith that it will.

Will it take time, well of course. Will it be worth it. Yes I believe it will~

Work together. Vote for our childrens future.

FYI polls closing in 4 minutes in Massachusetts. Wish us luck!

Thank you for posting the speech. It will be well worth listening to again!

I know this has been a priority he's pursued vigorously since he's been in office, or tried to. . .

And so much good news -- lowest carbon emission in 20 years, not bad!

New pollution standards for new and existing power plants!! and just in the first 10 minutes!

A nice juicy policy speech but who's paying attention?

Al Gore: Obama Climate Change Speech Best 'By Any President Ever'

Former Vice President Al Gore hailed President Barack Obama's climate change speech at Georgetown University on Tuesday as "historic" and "the best address on climate by any president ever."

"I applaud the new measures announced by President Barack Obama this afternoon to help solve the climate crisis -- particularly the decision to limit global warming pollution from existing as well as new power plants," Gore wrote on his blog. "Following the important pledges he made in both his inaugural address and State of the Union speech earlier this year, and the historic gains in renewable energy and fuel efficiency that the President delivered in his first term, the policy changes he announced today represent important steps forward in the battle to halt catastrophic climate disruption."

And, here's the transcript..

1:45 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you! (Applause.) Thank you, Georgetown! Thank you so much. Everybody, please be seated. And my first announcement today is that you should all take off your jackets. (Laughter.) I’m going to do the same. (Applause.) It’s not that sexy, now. (Laughter.)

It is good to be back on campus, and it is a great privilege to speak from the steps of this historic hall that welcomed Presidents going back to George Washington.

I want to thank your president, President DeGioia, who’s here today. (Applause.) I want to thank him for hosting us. I want to thank the many members of my Cabinet and my administration. I want to thank Leader Pelosi and the members of Congress who are here. We are very grateful for their support.

And I want to say thank you to the Hoyas in the house for having me back. (Applause.) It was important for me to speak directly to your generation, because the decisions that we make now and in the years ahead will have a profound impact on the world that all of you inherit.

On Christmas Eve, 1968, the astronauts of Apollo 8 did a live broadcast from lunar orbit. So Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, William Anders -- the first humans to orbit the moon -– described what they saw, and they read Scripture from the Book of Genesis to the rest of us back here. And later that night, they took a photo that would change the way we see and think about our world.

the rest..

So much good news on what this admin has accomplished and what they're planning. Big plans too!! Audience is cheering now. . . but he set up carbon reduction standards with Chinese president Xi (pronunced "gee," who knew?) and announced that he's planning on repealing oit company tax breaks, i.e. the oil depletion allowance, which he also called for appealing at the first debate .

A Gina MacCarthy to head EPA ... worked for BP and she's been held up for months in the Senate . . .

"The senate should confirm her without any more obstruction or delay," thunderous applause!

And much much more . . .

Obama's Climate Action Plan Will Protect Our Health and Our Communities

President Obama has announced a robust plan for tackling climate change and reducing dangerous carbon pollution. This marks an historic turning point. No longer will power plants be allowed to dump unlimited amounts of carbon into our atmosphere, threatening our health and environment. Instead, we can clean up our skies and leave future generations with a more stable climate.

Without this kind of presidential leadership, our children and grandchildren would be left to cope with the devastating consequences of unchecked climate change. We can’t pass this burden on to them, especially when we can already see what climate disruption can do to people’s lives. From the Colorado residents who lost their homes in recent fires to the children who suffer more asthma attacks because of dirtier air, Americans are reeling from climate impacts right now.

President Obama’s plan will help us turn the tide. It will make a profound and lasting difference in America’s fight against climate change.

Most significantly the plan will reduce carbon pollution from power plants—the largest source of global warming emissions in the country. America has set limits for arsenic, lead, and mercury, but we let power plants release as much carbon pollution as they want even though it has serious implications for our health. Several states have stepped in and required power plants to cut carbon. Now it’s time for the Environmental Protection Agency to close this loophole and reduce this climate threat.

Setting carbon limits is something the EPA can do right now. It already has the authority—and the duty—under the Clean Air Act to create carbon standards for power plants. The agency can give states the flexibility to figure how to meet those standards. NRDC’s experts outlined a similar approach, and we concluded it can cut carbon pollution 26 percent by 2020 and save people money on electricity bills. This represents real and far-reaching carbon reductions.

President Obama Releases Bold Climate Plan

Doug Howell

Seattle, WA – Today President Barack Obama announced his administration's next steps for building a legacy of action to fight the climate crisis. The plan includes new energy efficiency standards for federal buildings and appliances, scales up responsible clean energy production on public lands with an ambitious new commitment to power 6 million homes by 2020, and uses the full authority of the Clean Air Act to cut dangerous carbon pollution from power plants.

"Today's climate announcement from the White House demonstrates the kind of bold leadership we've been waiting for to put us on the right path to fighting the ever-growing climate crisis. We are heartened by his commitment to taking this giant step forward toward meeting our carbon reduction and clean energy goals.

"This news should dramatically impact our Washington utilities. Last month Puget Sound Energy (PSE), a major owner of the Colstrip coal fired power plant in Montana--the largest climate polluter in the Northwest--released its 20 year energy plan without accounting for carbon in its final recommendation. With this additional information, we call on PSE to re-consider the economic risks associated with continuing to rely on its dirty and increasingly expensive coal plant.

"Rather, the commitment to establish new energy efficiency standards for federal buildings and appliances and the promise to increase responsible clean energy production on public lands, is the recipe for a sustainable energy future in Washington.

"The President is stepping up to reduce the carbon pollution that is destabilizing our climate, threatening our economy, and endangering our communities. We now look to our local leaders, regulators and Puget Sound Energy to ensure we take responsibility for this dangerous climate disrupting pollution."
