President Obama's Record on Helping Our Poor..

"Things Obama Has Done For The Poor That Never Get Highlighted" Or Acknowledged..

There are these memes that calls out on the Obama Administration as an Administration that doesn’t care about the poor or the "Black poor" and Obama is not fighting enough to reduce poverty to help low income Americans. I just don't buy it. It seems like a Rovian Strategy - if you continue to repeat it, it will stick and destroy

http://www.thepeoplesview.net/2011/01/things-obama-has-done-for-poor-that.html

Cross posted at dkos..

1) A $20 billion increase for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps.

2) A $1 billion in funding for the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) that is intended to revitalize low-income communities via "Job training and placement assistance", "Financial literacy programs", et al, to helping families become self-sufficient.

3) A $2 billion in new Neighborhood Stabilization Funds that will allow ailing neighborhoods be kept maintained.

4) A $1.5 billion in Homelessness Prevention Funds to keep people in their homes and prevent homelessness.

5) A $5 billion increase for the Weatherization Assistance Program to help low income families save on their residential energy expenditures by making their homes more energy efficient.

6) A $4 Billion program, The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, "authorizes funding for federal school meal and child nutrition programs and increases access to healthy food for low-income children."

7) As part of the HCR bill, subsidies will be available to the uninsured and families with income between the 133 percent and 400 percent of poverty level($14,404 for individuals and $29,326 for a family of four).

8) Estabilished Open Doors to end the 640,000 men, women and children who are homeless in America by 2020.

9) Increased the amount of federal Pell Grant awards so that funds are available to those with less access to have opportunity.

10) Provided $510 Million for the rehabilitation of Native American housing.

11) Expanded eligibility for Medicaid to all individuals under age 65 with incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level ($14,400 per year for an individual).

12) Providing assistance to low-income workers through the Earned Income Tax Credit giving millions of working families the break they need.

13) Education being the way out of Poverty, kicked off the "Race to the Top", a $4.3 billion program, that rewards via grants to States that meet a few key benchmarks for reform, and states that outperform the rest.

"Obama’s Quiet Campaign to Fight Poverty"

When the federal government recently released its official statistics on poverty, they showed that more Americans are living below the poverty line now than at any time since the U.S. Census Bureau began collecting data in 1959.

This disturbing increase reflects the ongoing fallout of the economic downturn. But the fact is that the statistics would have been worse had it not been for a concerted effort by the Obama administration to ease poverty—an effort that deserves more attention.

Ladders of Opportunity

“We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American; she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own.”

– President Barack Obama, Inaugural Address,

Stem the Tide

The economic crisis has hit low-income American families particularly hard. President Obama will help vulnerable Americans through this crisis by making sure they have the resources they need to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads, while also extending tax credits to low-wage workers.

Or edited, or outright lied about as in 2012. In 2010 they promoted the Tea Party to dismantle government and stop Obama from doing more. It was only online and in real life that we saw the differences.

The Tea Party being another Koch brothers creation to stop the sunset of the Bush tax cuts and the same as the Birchers, Libertarians, Inforwars crowd, et al.

Since he's been elected there have been online subliminals to destroy his character in the public mind so much that his supporters have been drowned out by the unproven stories.

It's been a uphill climb from the get-go, and it's clear the status quo did not want him in office. But logic and facts mean nothing when you've got that inside you brain.

On a Path to Ending Homelessness

Someone once told me -- in your head it's a dream, but on paper it's a plan. As a nation, we’ve talked about addressing the issue of homelessness, and now we have a plan. Over the last year, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), consisting of 19 federal agencies and chaired by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan, drafted the nation’s first comprehensive strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness.

snip

The plan sets ambitious but measurable goals: (1) end chronic homelessness in five years; (2) prevent and end homelessness among veterans in five years; (3) prevent and end homelessness for families, youth, and children within a decade; and (4) put us on a path to ending all types of homelessness.

The plan builds on existing interagency partnerships and evidence-based models that are working at the local level. It will focus the resources and efforts of federal agencies to offer a variety of comprehensive solutions. For example, the partnership between HUD, HHS, and Education will provide homeless families with not only a home, but the wrap-around services they need to remain off the streets.

This is doable but it requires all of us to work together - Congress, federal agencies, state and local officials, faith-based and community organizations, and business and philanthropic leaders across our country.

Detail from one of your links.

the valuable. detailed, information on Ending homelessness.

This is one of my personal gratitude issues.. It's thanks to the Democratic Plan that so many will not have to be without a home if they don't want to be. I know some people actually prefer living out outside but that's the exception.

Everyone should be able to have a roof or a yurt over their head to protect them from the elements and have a sanctuary to go home to.

Update on Ending Homelessness for our VETS..

White House Fellows Participate in Winterhaven Homeless Stand Down

Posted by Archie Bates on January 29, 2013 at 11:01 AM EDT

The White House Fellows recently had the great pleasure and honor of participating in the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Winterhaven Homeless Stand Down in Washington, DC. The Stand Down is an annual event in which over 60 federal, state, and community agencies provide a range of services to needy and homeless veterans. These include cholesterol checks, eye exams, employment counseling, clothing distribution, benefits claims assistance, PTSD and trauma screening, personal care items and meals. The Stand Down is part of the VA's goal to end veteran homelessness by 2015.

White House Fellows served in the kitchen and dining area, which for most veterans was the last stop of the day. Some Fellows greeted veterans upon their entry into the dining area and reviewed with each veteran his or her schedule, to ensure that each veteran had the opportunity to access all of the available resources. We served meals, including salads, vegetables, barbecue, desserts and beverages. Fellows also helped disabled veterans to their seats and carried veterans' meals and bags of supplies and clothing. Finally, we helped clean tables, so that no veteran would have to wait to be seated. With the other volunteers, we served over 500 veterans during the day.

I have a strong feeling if we had a majority of Dems in Congress that we could help people better and faster in getting on their feet with a home and a job.

the republicons wouldn't even vote to give 9/11 Rescue workers and New Yorkers money for medical treatment from toxic dust and debris at ground zero ..

I really like them. Part of my personal long range disaster plan - which I hope never comes to pass - would be to rebuild with either a yurt or dome house either one. If anything bad enough happened to trigger much insurance, you'd be starting from scratch anyway. This 100-yr-old house would cost over a quarter mil to rebuild, and you can bet I don't have that kind of insurance! I'm in the slow process of archiving irreplaceable family photos and storing them in a variety of places including the Cloud. Anything else except life itself can be replaced.

At my age I need less than before too. For instance, clothing. A few outfits appropriate for church and funerals at any season, and the rest is purely circumstantial. When I worked in health care I developed a tremendous fondness for non-medical style scrub tops, and when I counted those recently it turned out I'd accumulated 44. In summer I stick almost exclusively to sleeveless smocks (just counted 14 of those) and shorts, in winter fleece tops and bottoms mostly. If it all went away, I could do fine with a lot less.

What my greedy little heart really wants now is a $5K ELF. Now that would be a very practical expenditure!

I have some experience with off-grid living and compost toilets. This remote county has very few zoning laws, and I rather imagine the authorities would look the other way in case a major disaster struck, so long as a person was discreet and reasonable. The town lots average 1/4 acre, so it's not as if we're stacked to the rafters. My first choice would still be a dome, but I like yurts well enough. They really make wonderful summer cabins or lakeside cabanas, etc.

Obama SAVED the US Economy - Running Away From that Record Would be Suicidal in 2016

1. When the President had a remotely cooperative Congress, we passed a massive stimulus and jobs package that rescued this country from Soviet-style collapse.

2. This administration rescued the US automotive industry, saving hundreds of thousands if not millions of jobs, and restructured it to be competitive in the 21st century.

3. This administration invested so massively in this country's clean energy sector that it made us the world leader in these technologies, and made that sector one of the few consistent bright spots in job growth.

4. The lack of progress since then has been 100% the result of Republican obstruction in Congress since they took the House. There is no ambiguity on this point, it's just a fact.

Since I've always followed the financial news whether I had $ or not, I knew this damned housing bubble would burst sooner than later, and I'd been preparing for the fallout a long, long time. That's why I'm comparatively comfortable from a frugal standpoint, but even that would never have been possible w/o President Obama, and don't think I don't know it. He helped save my bacon (and everyone else's) and that's the main reason I owe him such a huge debt of gratitude, too much ever to repay. It's also why I consider it a joyful duty to defend him.

Most people in rural areas are poor, and it's not because they're the lazy parasites their beloved overlords have called them. I remember Harry Truman saying something about how long would it take for a man being whacked over the head with a 2x4 until he figured out exactly who was on the other end of it? When and if that happens, Katy bar the door.

The people around here are nowhere near figuring it out yet. But I wonder if a few, even the worst off, have at least a slight inkling when they see that even with my very modest means I've managed to live pretty well by comparison, and that w/o debt. It seems to mystify as well as anger some, and w/o just cause they've poured their bile out over my head on many an occasion. I can only hope one day they'll realize the wisdom of Dr. Howard Dean's assertion that only a fool lets the Republicans handle the nation's $. Truer words never spoken.
