(53,661 posts)Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., January 17, 1942) is an American former professional boxer, generally considered among the greatest heavyweights in the sport's history. A controversial and even polarizing figure during his early career, Ali is today widely regarded not only for the skills he displayed in the ring but for the values he exemplified outside of it: religious freedom, racial justice and the triumph of principle over expedience.[1][2] He is one of the most recognized sports figures of the past 100 years, crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and "Sports Personality of the Century" by the BBC.[3][4]
Born Cassius Clay, at the age of 22 he won the world heavyweight championship in 1964 from Sonny Liston in a stunning upset. Shortly after that bout, Ali joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name. He subsequently converted to Sunni Islam in 1975.
In 1967, three years after winning the heavyweight title, Ali refused to be conscripted into the U.S. military, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to the Vietnam War. He was eventually arrested and found guilty on draft evasion charges and stripped of his boxing title. He did not fight again for nearly four yearslosing a time of peak performance in an athlete's career. Ali's appeal worked its way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, where in 1971 his conviction was overturned.
Ali would go on to become the first and only three-time lineal World Heavyweight Champion.
Nicknamed "The Greatest", Ali was involved in several historic boxing matches.[5] Notable among these were the first Liston fight, three with rival Joe Frazier, and one with George Foreman, where he regained titles he had been stripped of seven years earlier.
Ali revolutionized the sport by the sheer power and magnetism of his personality. At a time when most fighters let their managers do the talking, Ali was articulate, witty and loquacious. He easily controlled press conferences and interviews, spoke freely and intelligently about issues unrelated to boxing and wrote rhymes that humorously denigrated his opponents and predicted the round in which "they must fall."

He was a symbol of the best of those days. I thought he was 'The Greatest.'

(22,541 posts)It's a good thing this time. It's why PBO requested the vote and at least a delay. It gives Israel an opening to voice concerns.
Normally I'm not Israel's biggest fan - or its biggest critic. I figure everybody over there has responsibility for the mess. But this time, with Syria so firmly on Russia and Iran's team, Israelis and the Palestinians both are in danger. Both short and long term if we don't get a handle on things.
Cha
(305,418 posts)for the report and analysis.
Like we agreed yesterday.. "it's a snake pit" and the President is doing everything he can to unravel it while he's in charge..
This is from his speech in Eygpt that sheshe brought to light on another thread..
Of course, recognizing our common humanity is only the beginning of our task. Words alone cannot meet the needs of our people. These needs will be met only if we act boldly in the years ahead; and if we understand that the challenges we face are shared, and our failure to meet them will hurt us all.
For we have learned from recent experience that when a financial system weakens in one country, prosperity is hurt everywhere. When a new flu infects one human being, all are at risk. When one nation pursues a nuclear weapon, the risk of nuclear attack rises for all nations. When violent extremists operate in one stretch of mountains, people are endangered across an ocean. When innocents in Bosnia and Darfur are slaughtered, that is a stain on our collective conscience. That is what it means to share this world in the 21st century. That is the responsibility we have to one another as human beings.
And this is a difficult responsibility to embrace. For human history has often been a record of nations and tribes -- and, yes, religions -- subjugating one another in pursuit of their own interests. Yet in this new age, such attitudes are self-defeating. Given our interdependence, any world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will inevitably fail. So whatever we think of the past, we must not be prisoners to it. Our problems must be dealt with through partnership; our progress must be shared.

(22,541 posts)The thing is, it's clear that Assad is no friend of Israel. He's allied with Russia and Iran. Russia supplies both Syria and Iran with weapons. And both those countries threaten Israel. So, Russia is no friend of Israel. It's no coincidence that Putin is using Neo-Nazis to beat up LGBTs in Russia. He is a deadly bigot.
Now, I have an an article for you to read. It seems unrelated, but it's not.

"So why, you may ask, am I not surprised by Alexeyevs outrageous reversal? Because I remember the Anti-Zionist Committee of the Soviet Republic.
In the 1970s and 1980s, no one in Russia was talking about gay people. The scapegoats then were the Jews, who were demonized by government propaganda campaigns (under the guise of anti-Zionism) and faced widespread discrimination. Russian Jews who wanted to escape this treatment by emigrating were forbidden to do so, and by the early 1980s these Refuseniks had become a major problem for Russias international relations.
So in 1983, a desperate Russia tried some public-relations trickery. The Department of Propaganda set up the Anti-Zionist Committee and recruited or pressured various prominent Soviet Jews soldiers, writers, artists, scientists to join it. To decline meant repercussions. The idea was to show that even the Jews themselves agreed with the Kremlins smears. Happily, the effort failed; neither Jews within Russia nor the international community were fooled by the Kremlins pocket Jews, and the AZSCP collapsed into irrelevance.
If gays are the new Jews in Russia, as many people have said, then Nikolai Alexeyev is the new Anti-Zionist Committee. Russia is desperate again: The upcoming Sochi Olympics are important to Putins sense of his standing in the world, and the international campaign against Russian homophobia is staining them more every day. This campaign is working, and Russia knows it. What better way to slow this movements momentum and to confuse and discourage those in the West who have been working for it than for its most visible advocate to minimize its importance and dismiss it as a Western, anti-Russian plot?"

(22,541 posts)But with his disgusting tolerance of Neo-Nazis beating up gays, his mask has finally slipped.
No one can tolerate any violence from Neo-Nazis. If you do, you're agreeing with where it always leads. They view LGBTs, Jews, Blacks, Asians, the Roma as inferior people who don't deserve to live. And if they live, it is only to serve.
Neos are exactly the same as the originals, without the insistence that the Nazi be German. White is enough. But I can tell you one thing about Vlad. He has always viewed Russia as superior to other nations and Russians as superior to other people. He was in the KGB during the USSR's anti-Zionist movement that started in 1967. Even though Gorbachev declared perestroika after he became Secretary General of the Communist Party Soviet Union in 1985, it wasn't until 1991, 2 months before the USSR fell apart, that diplomatic relations with Israel were reestablished.

(6,151 posts)seem to hold the belief that those who rail loudest against gays are closeted themselves. Can't think of the title but Al Pacino made a movie about a cop with that problem.
