Reuters: Obama to extend wage law to cover two million home care aides
snip//
"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration said on Tuesday it will extend the protection of U.S. minimum wage and overtime law to almost two million home health workers who assist the elderly and disabled, setting an assertive tone for the new U.S. labor secretary.
Sworn in only two weeks ago, Thomas Perez said in a statement that home health workers provide "vital services."
"Today we are taking an important step toward guaranteeing that these professionals receive the wage protections they deserve while protecting the right of individuals to live at home," he said.
Under a new rule, the department said home health workers, personal care aides and certified nursing assistants will be brought under the coverage of the Fair Labor Standards Act starting in January 2015."

Amazing! Thank you for that. It is funny but I remember Senator Obama running for President was often seen doing things - shoveling at the Iowa floods, painting places with a roller. It seems like he doesn't get time for that kind of thing as much now.

(87,491 posts)As shown in the video, care givers provide a huge service to the clients and to the families alike. It is a huge burden to a daughter or son trying to to care for parent, when working full time. I know because we went through that for my dad.
They are invaluable and deserve the coverage of the Fair Labor Standards Act starting in January 2015.
Thank you Cha~
And thanks to Obama and Perez! Awesome!

As I've mentioned.. What a journey PBO has been on for this to happen. From "walking a day in Pauline Beck's shoes" I love how he pitched in with her chores and John Thornton saying it looked like Obama knew what he was doing) while Senator Obama to becoming POTUS and making sure HomeCare Givers get as fair a shake as other workers.

Btw, there was lots of grumbling about Thomas Perez before PBO nominated him.. glad he was Confirmed!

1. Stories were passed on to me by the Elders. I listened to them talk by the fireplace when we went hunting together. I would always go along with them. Sometimes it was hard to listen to some of the stories because they used Cree words. They would mix up the words and I had to listen carefully to know what they meant.More..

He said she was filling out paperwork instead of being able to rest to get better from cancer.
So many stories like this.
Our president really gets what is going on in the lives of regular people.
