how many more times?

President Obama comforts a relative of one of the victims of the Washington Navy Yard shootings at a memorial service at Marine Barracks, Washington

“Once more we come together to mourn the lives of beauty and to comfort the wonderful families who cherished them. Once more we pay tribute to all who rushed towards the danger, who risked their lives so others might live. Once more our hearts are broken. Once more we ask why….

….. On Monday morning, these 12 men and women woke up like they did every day. They left home and they headed off to work. Gerald Read’s wife Cathy said, “See you tonight for dinner.” And John Johnson looked at his wife Judy and said what he always said whenever they parted, “Goodbye beautiful. I love you so much”…..

….. What Robert Kennedy understood, what Dr. King understood, what all our great leaders have always understood, is that wisdom does not come from tragedy alone or from some sense of resignation in the fallibility of man. Wisdom comes through the recognition that tragedies such as this are not inevitable, and that we possess the ability to act and to change, and to spare others the pain that drops upon our hearts. So in our grief, let us seek that grace. Let us find that wisdom. And in doing so, let us truly honor these 12 American patriots.

you had posted this a few minutes ago and didn't see anything. I had a feeling you might.

It's been quite the emotional experience as you know just posting all these remarks from President Obama and the photos of those who were left so sad from losing their loved ones.. because of this gun violence.

I think the threads are different enough that I can leave mine.. what do you think?

I just wish we could end all this unnecessary violence. When is it enough?

I wish it too.. The only thing we can do is keep trying and you know we are.

One suggestion I read on TOD was all gun owners should have "liability insurance". I had never seen that before and it seemed like it might have merit.

cheap and would not cover any illegal act. So no impact at all on any of these shootings and no payouts. I do not think it will be the panacea some think. Better to enter all data into the NICS and improve mental health. That would have stopped several before they started.

it was a reasonable and responsible idea. It didn't get much support, but it may just have been one of those days.

As far as this thread, tears all the way. I have friends for whom it was specially hurtful. The lack of gun control is something they feel is endangering THEIR lives and liberty. Take that, Libertarian gun fanatics!

Following that up in our talk with the government shut down that will affect so many, likely these same families grieving in D.C, they were EXASPERATED.

They contribute time, food and money to a food bank near them and they were extremely worried about not being able to meet the need even in such a tiny place as they live. People are not being helped by the 'do nothing - but evil' GOP Congress.

I read an OP-ED to them, that said the food stamp vote was irresponsible and they NAMED NAMES. No Democrat voted to cut the people off, but three of the state GOP did. As I read the names, including one they supported in a past election, and who voted against feeding the poor, elderly, disabled, over the speakerphone, I heard the yelling in the back ground as we were on the speaker.

They are FURIOUS. They will be working to throw ALL the GOP out in 2014 for pulling these stunts.

The way that was put was so poignant - how the people left for their job like they did everyday.

And one very angry President. He radiates his frustration that no headway has been made in action about gun laws. You can see it in every fiber of his body. The pain is in his heart, freshwest. It is in all of our hearts.
