President Obama listens to hunger striker Eliseo Medina as he and the First Lady visit with immigration protesters in their tent on the Washingon Mall November 29. Since November 12, immigration advocates comprising Fast for Families have abstained from food as they call on congress to take up action on the immigration issue.

This is ripping families apart and it's not right.
So good to see the Obamas at the tent. You can see that they take this issue seriously.
Thanks, Cha, great thread!

(305,412 posts)It's so vital for the families affected and for the betterment of our country.
I can't imagine being able to go without food for all those days unless I was prepared to die and I'm sure they are prepared to die for their just cause.
Advocates redouble efforts on immigration reform
snip//
PHOENIX -- This was supposed to be the year of immigration reform.
But with hope quickly fading that an immigration bill will pass by year's end, advocates are shifting their focus to 2014, girding for an even tougher battle as the already-contentious issue drifts into the perilous political waters of an election year.
Reform advocates are determined to keep the immigration debate alive, vowing to continue pressing lawmakers to pass immigration reform, if not this year, then next.
"We need to keep fanning the flames," said Eduardo Nevares, auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix and immigration-reform advocate.
Until Congress acts, some activists also are increasing calls on President Barack Obama to take action on his own by stopping deportations and expanding his deferred-action program to a larger number of undocumented immigrants, not just those brought here illegally as children.
Much more..

On November 12, faith, immigrant rights and labor leaders announced the launch of Fast for Families: A Call for Immigration Reform and Citizenship, taking place on the National Mall, steps away from the Capitol. Leaders and immigrant members of the community will fast every day and night, abstaining from all foodexcept waterto move the hearts and compassion of members of Congress to pass immigration reform with a path to citizenship.
I watched as union, faith and civil rights leaders visited these fasters in a show of solidarity. And then something interesting started happening.

As Valerie Jarrett tweeted.. "It's very moving" and they have her "deepest support".
We're going to need to CLEAN HOUSE-2014 first and then do Immigration Reform. I'd like to be wrong and we get it done this year.

(16,331 posts)are a class act, including the two girls. When parents set a good example then you can see it in the children. This country so desperately needs more role models like the first family. There was a time in history when being classy was a virtue and it didn't matter how much money you had, you could still be classy. Nowadays we look down our noses at people who are classy in their behavior, their dress, their manner of speaking as "elitist". Not me. As far as I'm concerned we can bring back celebrating people who won't stoop to that level instead of the Honey Boo Boos and Duck Dynasty and OC Choppers people who in my estimation are a poor reflection on our country. But I digress......

I suppose it's a good thing that I don't know who honey booboo, duckdynasty or oc choppers are? Full disclosure.. no tv.

(16,331 posts)I have a TV but rarely watch it because I only have rabbit ears and only get a few stations and mostly just watch PBS.
I have heard all about those TV shows from others and from the intertubes I've never seen one episode of any of them, except parts of OC Choppers where the father yells at his sons using nothing but every profane word in the book and they, in turn, do the same. Ugh.

I do have shows that I like that are on the tv.. but I just wait a day and they show them online the next day. I'm not without my viewing addictions by any stretch of the imagination. I like to think of them as smart shows. Like "The Good Wife".

(3,982 posts)I am sympathetic, but very concerned that the groups pushing this reform seem to not be recognizing and including *all* the families that are broken up by the immigration system. The current immigration "reform" proposal wants to make non-nuclear relatives equivilent to immediate (nuclear family) petitions. Immediate relatives (Spouses and minor children particularly) *always* need to get top priority. That is simply common sense.
Wait times for Citizen immediate relatives have dramatically increased this year, seperating spouses and minor children with waits of more than a year or several years, primarily due to pulling resources off of immediate family petitions to process Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals(DACA) and Provisional Waiver, two administrative changes made to assist undocumented immigrants.
The people using these new processes get to stay with their families, so they should not have been processed at the expense of other families who are physically seperated.
While I am sympathetic and am in favor of humanely resolving honest immigrants (documented or undocumented) that are stuck in an awful system, I would feel better about the current movement if it was more inclusive. Fix the broken system, don't fix it depending on who has more lobbying power. Fix it for all and make sure that spouses and minor children are given fast processing (like business already has?).

VP Biden is the same way. Always smiling with a genuine smile. And everyone around them looks happy too.
They just make ya feel good.
Unlike the last occupants of the White House. He looked like he was bored or bothered when he met with anyone that wasn't big business or a fellow rethuglican or a big campaign donor. Look at almost any picture of Bush the Lesser when he was among the masses. If he didn't look bored, he looked like someone had farted.

Bless their hearts.. the House Speaker wants only to cut food stamps and repeal ACA for the almost 50th time. He doesn't care if these Activists for Immigration Reform fast to death waiting for it.
