WJLA: President Obama Visits Politics And Prose On Small Business Saturday
"President Barack Obama is doing his part to support small businesses. Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha dropped in Saturday at Washingtons Politics and Prose bookstore and purchased what he said was a long list of books that included The Kite Runner, Harold and the Purple Crayon, and The Sports Gene. The president said he bought a reader for every age, from 5 to 52 his age. Obama sent a tweet earlier Saturday about the importance of supporting small businesses"

(87,491 posts)Im gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, gonna, get
a bronto-bronto-bronto-bronto-saurus for a pet!
Lulu is so accustomed to getting what she wants that when her parents deny her birthday request for a brontosaurus, she throws a four-day temper tantrum and then storms off into the forest in search of the dinosaur she clearly deserves. Lulu isnt particularly impressed with the snake, tiger, and bear she encounters, but then she finds hima beautiful, long-necked, graceful brontosaurus. Mr. B completely agrees with Lulu that having a pet would be a wonderful thing, and Lulu thinks shes gotten her birthday wish at last. Until she realizes that Mr. Brontosaurus thinks that she would make an ideal pet for him!
How will Lulu ever get out of this sticky situation without throwing a fit (Mr. B does not respond well to those), or using force (Mr. B is much too tall to bonk on the head with her suitcase), or smushing her pickle sandwich? Beloved childrens author Judith Viorst and Caldecott-winning illustrator Lane Smith offer a fresh and funny tale with several surprise endings!

(305,412 posts)in the spirit of sheshe's bringing the synopsis on board..
Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan grow up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan, the son of Amirs fathers servant, is a Hazaraa shunned ethnic minority. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him.
The Kite Runner is a novel about friendship and betrayal, and about the price of loyalty. It is about the bonds between fathers and sons, and the power of fathers over sonstheir love, their sacrifices, and their lies. Written against a backdrop of history that has not been told in fiction before, The Kite Runner describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But through the devastation, Khaled Hosseini offers hope: through the novels faith in the power of reading and storytelling, and in the possibilities he shows us for redemption.

"WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama has pitched in to help small businesses get into the holiday shopping season.
The president took his daughters, Malia and Sasha, along on a shopping run to a bookstore a few blocks from the White House.
He says he made the visit because it's "small business Saturday" and he wanted to support a small business.
The retail industry is encouraging shoppers to patronize mom-and-pop businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It's a counterpoint to Black Friday and the sales and special deals offered by department stores and other large retailers."

(3,157 posts)was the clapping and cheering when he turned and wished everyone a happy holiday. Lots of support, no jeering, etc. The way the press has been spinning things, you'd think there'd be all kinds of protesters/hecklers in what was a pretty good sized crowd.
Oh, wait. This was a BOOK store. People who shop there READ. All by themselves. Never mind. It makes sense now.

(305,412 posts)didn't even notice "the leather" when I was posting the pics. And, then I saw it mentioned on some others threads. Right now I had to go look to see the jacket.. there were just so many other things to look at. I was zeroing in on all their shoes and Sasha's boots and the expressions on their lovely faces.

elleng
(136,064 posts)and historic because he's been there! Its a few blocks away from an independent movie house that almost closed a few years ago, but the neighborhood worked to invest and maintain it, and now its a successful independent movie house. (Avalon.)
I'd thought of moving into an apartment there, but then found my cottage! So I just visit, and meet daughters there at a favorite cafe.
Cha
(305,412 posts)remember seeing a thread about you finding a cottage now. That must have been where the Sunset was taken? Marvelous, ellen!
That's really good to hear about the Independent movie house.. shows what we can do for our community and neighborhoods if we have the spirit and dedication.

(136,064 posts)Hope to post pic of the cottage too, when I get it together again. Blue in Alaska actually posted one of cottage from the air, before my sunset picture, on a nearby photo group thread, here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/103623939

Chevy Chase DC is I'd say 'upper middle class,' don't know about 'upscale,' but ChCh MD, across one street/avenue, becomes 'upscale,' I guess. Lots of 'names' live there, in lovely old homes I probably couldn't afford. Many retirees in ChCh DC.

(6,151 posts)If I'd retired to a city, I would probably spend most of my time in bookshops and cafes, book&coffee fiend that I am.
It's a delight, though, to remember the days when I could. And to watch Malia and Sasha growing up so beautifully. Of course inner beauty trumps, but I'm not blind either and you'd laugh to think how I could probably easily walk under Sasha's outstretched arms. Love those boots. They look like Uggs and probably are. Mine are knockoffs but I love 'em anyway.
Yes, that's a fine jacket President Obama's wearing. I hated it when people made fun of his jeans. What do they expect anyway? He looks dignified and comfortable - to me, that's cool.
What's that, you say? There were other people in the store too? Sorry, I hardly noticed.
Cha
(305,412 posts)read your fine post this morning.. making me smile.
"..Inner beauty trumps, but I'm not blind either.." that's an excellent way to put it!
I have some Ugg knockoffs too I got in New York and I loved them so much I brought them with me to Kaua'i but it doesn't get cold enough to wear them. I just look at them and know they're there.
It did look like so much fun what the President, his daughters, and all the folks were doing Saturday. I just wanted to be there with them. Browsing and book shopping.. and maybe making some occasional glances their way. You know.. just doing my part to support the local businesses.
