Barack H. Obama is the 44th President of the United States.
His story is the American story values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others.
With a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas, President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He was raised with help from his grandfather, who served in Patton's army, and his grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management at a bank.
After working his way through college with the help of scholarships and student loans, President Obama moved to Chicago, where he worked with a group of churches to help rebuild communities devastated by the closure of local steel plants.
He went on to attend law school, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Upon graduation, he returned to Chicago to help lead a voter registration drive, teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago, and remain active in his community.
President Obama's years of public service are based around his unwavering belief in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose. In the Illinois State Senate, he passed the first major ethics reform in 25 years, cut taxes for working families, and expanded health care for children and their parents. As a United States Senator, he reached across the aisle to pass groundbreaking lobbying reform, lock up the world's most dangerous weapons, and bring transparency to government by putting federal spending online.
He was elected the 44th President of the United States on November 4, 2008, and sworn in on January 20, 2009. He and his wife, Michelle, are the proud parents of two daughters, Malia and Sasha.

(11,833 posts)Happy Birthday President Obama! Thank you for helping strengthen the economy and keeping us out of stupid wars. Thank you for refocusing attention on the middle class and working poor. Thank you for helping pass, seemingly against all odds and with nearly everyone complaining, the most significant health care reform of our generation. Thank you for being a leading voice in expanding rights to include more and more people who in the recent past suffered horrendous legal discrimination. Thank you for bringing your brilliant, generous wife Michelle to the world stage, and for her work with veterans and kids. Thank you for inspiring me to actually care about local politics, enough to get involved, for the first time in my life. Keep fighting till the end of your term. It is very much appreciated.

(6,151 posts)I won't be entirely happy until we can also address him as Chief Justice Obama. SCOTUS is where he's most needed next.

(305,440 posts)He was actually born at 7:24pm and yes in Honolulu, HI, USA .. I remember that from his long form birth certificate posted online.

(37,468 posts)OTW question, do you like Honolulu ? When I was there, I liked it. I didn't see much of the city, only the part near Waikiki Beach and the way to the airport.
Cha
(305,440 posts)where Honolulu is the capital.
But, I have been to Honolulu a couple of years ago and it was just like any other big city on the mainland. I couldn't even tell I was on an Island. But, that was just my inner city experience.. others may have another perspective.
Were you just there passing through?

(6,151 posts)It reads, Made in the USA.
But I can't bear to use it for coffee. What if I dropped or chipped it? What if this, what if that? So it sits safely on my desk where I use it as a pen holder.
Cha

(6,151 posts)President Obama's in quite a different situation. He has to do what he can to nudge the country forward, and the Willfull Idiocracy can only be prodded so hard before they stampede in an even worse panic. Even so, President Obama has done a great job against insanely savage opposition. In his heart of hearts, I believe, he's far less centrist than some misperceive him to be.

(11,833 posts)I think we will see that even more in the coming years, both during his Presidency and well past it. I hope we get another President as great as him in my lifetime. I doubt it will happen. If it does I will be very pleasantly surprised. He has stimulated me to open my heart in a very positive manner, toward people from all walks of life. Hope you enjoy a wonderful week.

(6,151 posts)As to another such great president, we might be very blessed with any number of our candidates. But no one will ever be him. Hard act to follow.
I confess one reason I appreciate President Obama so much - he just makes me happier.

(11,833 posts)It's going well. I took my dad out for a birthday dinner this evening. Yes, his birthday is August 4. I told him that what I've learned both from President Obama and from my dad is that if you open your heart to people from all walks of life, rich or poor, male or female, gay or straight, achievement oriented or non-achievement oriented, it can make you and those around you happier. He paused for a long while and said thank you and that it really means a lot to him.

(6,151 posts)Both my parents are gone now. But two things Dad always said that remind me of President Obama:
1) Beware the wrath of a patient man.
2) Only a jackass answers every donkey that brays.
