January 22, 2015 by Omar Rivero
Shortly after his wildly popular State of the Union address, Pres. Obama took his populist plan to rebuild the middle class straight to the Republican red state of Idaho and wait until you see how the crowd reacted to it.
As it turns out, even red state voters are tired of their own party putting politics over people and obstructing the hard-fought economic progress that we have achieved.
After chiding Republicans for refusing to present their ideas to fix Americas pressing issues, Pres. Obama wrapped it up all with, Whoever we are whether we are Republican, or Democrat, or independent, or young or old, or black, white, gay, straight we all share a common vision for our future. We want a better country for your generation, and for your kids generation. And I want this country to be one that shows the world what we still know to be true that we are not just a collection of red states and blue states; we are still the United States of America. Thats what were fighting for. Thats what were pushing for.
Instead of boos and jeers, he was met with roaring applause and cheers.

(26,549 posts)You can't gerrymander the Senate. The "districts" are the states.
What you can do is run a terrible campaign, where you flee from all of your accomplishments and pretend you are "not as bad" as the other candidate. Leads to a terrible turnout among people who would have voted for you, because "not as bad" does not work anymore. We've seen too many results of that.

(208 posts)That's fairly surprising Nice video, hadn't seen it.
Also, this gives some measure of hope to those of us who wish that today's bigotry had long since died the quiet death of resolved ignorance.
Thanks, recommended of course.

(9,669 posts)for trying to unite the country, may be in for a shock. Succeeding in turning away diviseness would make for much crow being eaten.
Down the hatch!

Along with about 6600 other people who knew this was the one in a million chance of a lifetime to be at an event where the current President of the United States was speaking.
The event was electrifying.
Tons of college students filled the pavilion to hear their President.
And there were many women, a bunch of them that were over 30 years of age, and you could just tell that they really loved the President for his political stances and for him fighting for their equal workpay rights.
President Obama hit on all of the same issues affecting the middle class and the poor in his speech in Boise that he had outlined in his State of the Union speech the night before.
He added quite a few comments about Boise State University's technological growth, and their football team's blue turf, during his speech to make his speech seem more local, so that we would realize that he was truly aware of all of us living here in Idaho.
It was not a canned speech in any regard.
He spoke from the heart.
His demeanor during the speech was comfortable and easy, and you could tell what he was saying was coming from deep within his soul.
The speech was broadcast live by at least 2 local tv stations.
And each station tried to outdo the other, acting as if they really had supported President Obama all along.
It was sort of humorous to watch the evening forecast and watch the news anchors fall over themselves praising President Obama.
Yet, at the same time, it gave me an enormous sense of pride, and gratitude, that they both displayed a proper level of respect towards President Obama's visit here, even though they have disagreed with his policies over the years.
Yes, Idaho is a red state.
But, the biggest takeaway from President Obama's speech was that the United States is not a conglomeration of red states and blue states.
You could sense the urgency in his words explicating how members of Congress should stop acting only as Republicans, or only as Democrats, and instead to act like Americans, working together to solve the issues we face today.
We had a really heavy fog that set in the valley early that morning.
But, it burned off about an hour before the President's plane touched down in Boise.
For the rest of the day, the skies were clear blue.
Not a cloud in the sky.
Man, it was magnificent.

(17,656 posts)My friend said that it was the best day for Democrats in this state in the last 20 years!
That's because President Obama's speech was filled with so much hope.
Most of the people that attended this event were college students.
I would say that the majority of the audience was around 23 years old, or so.
BSU is not a typical college campus in which only students just out of high school attend for 4 years.
Instead, it is more of a college that the entire community attends, as the age of the average student is about 28 years of age.
Many "non-traditional" students return to college in their 30s, 40s, and even in to their 50s.
Nevertheless, after seeing so many young people get so energized at this event, I came away with the feeling that the Republican's grip on the majority in the state's capitol is no longer a sure thing in the very near future.
These young students "get it"; they know what it means to struggle hard to get ahead in this modern, technologically advanced world that we live in today.
Just a 20 short years ago, Idaho's economy was based on agriculture products, mining, and timber sales.
Today the majority of the state's income is derived from technology, engineering, and patents stemming from research in both technological and medical fields.
It was definitely a day to remember.
