President Barack Obama told college graduates Sunday that only their generation can break the cycle of a political system consumed by "small things" that works for the benefit of a few. (May 5)
He is calling these graduates to take on the task set for us by the Founding Fathers. But it is not only for those leaving college. The future is theirs - and ours - to win or lose.
An excellent video clip of this was posted by hue in the V&MM forum. Please K&R his video there and get it on the Greatest Page, my BOG friends:

(53,661 posts)Those who want to continue to be cynical and complain, WILL continue to do nothing but that.
Misery is easy, the tool of the maliciously lazy. We WILL take the negative energy they feed on and WILL create something beautiful.
That AP clip was great with the best part, but it cut him off in the middle of a sentence. But their clips are always short, it's not an intentional editing out like Fox.
Curious what else was said. I asked in the other thread, does TOD have the full address?
Cha
(305,428 posts)full address to this post. lol sorry. No, Chips said she'd be back later with more pics and no doubt the PBO's Full Address!

(305,428 posts)Sunshine! My sis in New York was loving the 80 degree weather the other day while I was sweating in our 80 degree high humidity climate. I like it though because it's like a walking sauna and it's good for you!

(87,498 posts)I've only ever lived in Massachusetts. Born and raised.
I guess I don't get out much. Oh wait, three months in college, during summerbreak! I lived in Providence RI, with a couple of girlfriends. Pretty rough area. It was fun until one night a car tried blocking ours into a corner at a supermarket....scary. We got around them and drove to Mass for the night!
I really came to post this, Ohio/Obama!
Great picture!

That does sound scary when you were in College. Did you go to Brown?
Thanks she for that pic of President Obama.. who also recieved an honorary doctorate..
Ohio State also bestowed an honorary doctorate on Obama, applauding his unwavering belief in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose. Also honored was photographer Annie Liebovitz, whose images of Obama and his family have become iconic reflections on the nations first black president.

*******
No, Cha I did not go to Brown, but we took an apartment close to there and it was a pretty rough area. My friend Mary's brother had a buisness down there and offered us jobs for the summer. We all were going to college in western Mass. We did have our fun though, and we made friends with a sweet guy that had a very large St Bernard. They watched out for us!

May 5, 2013
President Obama delivers the commencement address at the Ohio State University on Sunday. Later this spring he will deliver addresses at Morehouse College, a historically black university, and at the Naval Academy.
Note this video is nearly an hour long and they have some important things to say before Obama speaks.
If I can find the youtube version, I will post it here since it may not stay up long on C-SPAN.
Cha

John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address, January 20, 1961
In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.
Now the trumpet summons us again not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation" a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.
SNIP
And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country.
My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

(87,498 posts)I listened while reading the text.
Unfortunately, youve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity thats at the root of all our problems; some of these same voices also doing their best to gum up the works. Theyll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave and creative and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we cant be trusted.
We have never been a people who place all of our faith in government to solve our problems; we shouldnt want to. But we dont think the government is the source of all our problems, either. Because we understand that this democracy is ours. And as citizens, we understand that its not about what America can do for us; its about what can be done by us, together, through the hard and frustrating but absolutely necessary work of self-government. (Applause.) And, Class of 2013, you have to be involved in that process. (Applause.)
Thank you freshwest, a truly inspiring speech by our President.
To the Class of 2013!

(12,288 posts)It's a recurring theme in President Obama's speeches as of late, and something that has been neglected by political leaders for far too long.
If these OH graduates are like the interns and new folks going to work in my office, we're in good hands. The young people entering the workforce (I feel so old saying that) inspire me with their creativity, expressiveness and sense of social responsibility. I've been out of college for about 20 years now, and am somewhat envious that I'm not part of the discussions taking place in classrooms about civil rights and how our country is transforming into something new and exciting.
And someone who has a lot to do with that is our President. I think most college graduates are smart enough to see through the cynicism and view government as something that belongs to all of us. President Obama mobilized students like no other president before him, and he stood by his commitment to change the structure of student loans and make college more accessible. They will not forget that.
