Hillary Clinton
Related: About this forumCesar Chavez’s Son: Not True That My Father Would Have Supported Sanders
The fact of the matter is most of us in the family that continue to work closely in the movement that my father began strongly support the candidacy of Hillary, Paul F. Chavez, president of the Cesar Chavez foundation, told BuzzFeed News.
snip//
On Sunday, David Villarino, a son-in-law of labor leader Cesar Chavez, introduced Bernie Sanders to a crowd in Bakersfield, California.
Villarino told the crowd if he was alive today, Chavez would support Sanders for president.
That energetic proclamation did not sit well with Paul Chavez, Cesar Chavezs son and president of the Cesar Chavez Foundation, who told BuzzFeed News the family largely supports Hillary Clinton
snip//
Paul Chavez said that support goes up to his mother, Helen Chavez, 88, who is in the hospital fighting an infection. Nevertheless, he said his mother has asked his sister to talk to him about running public service announcements for Clinton, urging people to get out to vote.
The same day she received her ballot, she voted for Hillary and sent it back in, Paul Chavez said, referring to the imminent California primary. Shes always talking to people, Are you registered to vote? You gotta vote for Hillary, we gotta stop Trump, he said of the presumptive Republican nominee.
His mother told him that if she werent sick, she would be walking precincts for Clinton today, the way she did for Bobby Kennedy back in the day.

Clinton has embraced the moral authority of the farm workers movement, deploying Dolores Huerta who worked with Cesar Chavez around the country as a Hispanic surrogate, and calling her one of her heroes in a Spanish-language ad that aired in California, Illinois, and Florida. The ad also highlights the endorsement of the United Farm Workers union.
snip//
Still, Paul Chavez called his father a practical idealist who would have seen a lot to like in Clintons worldview.
He believed this country was big enough and great enough to offer its share of bounty to all of us, but he also knew you had to go to work everyday and provide results on a daily basis, Paul Chavez said, before pointing to Clintons work for immigration policy, collective bargaining for farmworkers in California, and early childhood education for Latino children. When I think about that and the work and track record of Hillary there is no question in my mind who my father would support.

All of my family doesn't support Hillary now but I never talk politics with them since BS entered the scene.. I just know that we will be talking about it in the GE.

(31,170 posts)easy since we've agreed on all the really big stuff since we met 20 years ago. He and his wife will happily vote for Hillary, but the primary has changed stuff between us in small ways that I don't like.
Ah well.....a few more days...
Cha
(305,400 posts)My son and I had lots of good talks about Obama for 8 years and now since he's a BS fan we say nada the primary. He'll be glad to vote for Hill, though.. then we can discuss again during GE
I don't want to give burnie any power to 'cause any discord in my family.
My sister in California is a Hillary supporter, too.. so we talk about it.. I tell her things she doesn't know about her campaign.

(15,438 posts)It's nice to know that the legendary civil rights leader for farm workers and his wife would have stood side-by-side with Hillary Clinton, and they would have supported her candidacy! Excellent news!
I always thought it was strange that they would support Sanders' candidacy, considering his complicated past regarding Latino rights, and considering that Dolores Huerta is a strong Hillary Clinton surrogate.

(33,549 posts)In a hospital fighting an infection loves us - America - soooo much that she asked her son to speak up and out about Trump. I know the OP focuses on her Son In Law's misreading her husband's legacy but . . .

(521 posts)She played Helen Chávez in the 2014 biopic César Chávez.
Ironically, Rosario Dawson, who played Dolores Huerta in the same film, is a fanatical Sanders supporter.

Here she is with Cesar.. I'll edit the other one.

I had read that about Rosario.. she also has insulted Delores Huerta trying to tear down her legacy.. my money is on Delores!
Rosario Dawson is the one who evoked Monica Lewinski's name at a NY rally in April, implying that they would not be 'bullied' by the Clintons as Lewinsky apparently had been.

America Ferrera is a Clinton surrogate. She was an ardent supporter in 2008, as she is today. In April, she wrote this:

"Work everyday." Nothing is going to happen just because Bernie says it will. Things will happen, step by step, with Hillary's hard work, and that of her supporters. It will take time and there'll be no free college, but I'd bet there will be better health are, less inequality, more "liberty and justice for all."
Thanks for this, Cha.
