Years ago, coworkers at the lunch table were discussing the first woman to have qualified for participation at the Indy 500. Her speed during qualies put her in the middle of the pack. One coworker said, "but she had a very fast car. (several top male drivers) would have taken the pole position with it." At the time I thought, but didn't dare say, "are you telling me that (those drivers) who have a lot more money than she does would not have the best car in the field?"

She arrived at the track with an old piece of shit car that kept breaking down, because she had no money. And of course, the other crews were sitting around talking shit about how she was doing badly because she was a woman. AJ Foyt (who you did NOT want to piss off!) got wind of it and dealt with the problem: he unloaded his backup car, put Ms. Guthrie in it and had her turn four hot practice laps. If it was an official qualifying attempt she would have started outside of Row 3.

All was well though; Humpy Wheeler, who owned Charlotte Motor Speedway, helped find her a team to run the World 600 NASCAR race for.

What an insult to all of these accomplished women. Joan of Arc! Really? If Hillary waned to join a “long line of celebrated female firsts” she would step aside and let the stronger candidate defeat Trump. Instead she has a good chance of returning the White House to a so-called republican. Either way, it seems like her ascendancy assures at least four more years of establishment politics. What a waste. What a shame for this woman to to squander such a pivotal first.
