Korea Seeks Diplomatic Ties with Cuba

South Korea is seeking diplomatic relations with Cuba. The Caribbean communist country with a population of 11 million is one of only a handful of countries with which Seoul has no diplomatic relations. Cuba has however been an ally of North Korea since 1960.
Seoul is pushing for a meeting of the two countries' foreign ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
Foreign Minister Park Jin already met Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal on the sidelines of an international conference in Guatemala last month and proposed the resumption of diplomatic relations with Havana. Their meeting lasted for more than an hour.
According to a diplomatic source Vidal looked "cautious. But they exchanged candid opinions. The atmosphere was so cordial that she responded positively to Park's request to support South Korea's bid for election as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council."
