BRASILIA (Reuters) -Brazil's Supreme Court voted on Thursday to convict the first three people to stand trial for the storming of government buildings in the capital Brasilia on Jan. 8, sentencing them to at least 14 years in prison.

A majority of judges voted to convict Aecio Lucio Costa Pereira, a former employee of water utility Sabesp, who was arrested in the Senate building during the invasion, for crimes that include an attempted coup d'etat, armed criminal association and damage to historic buildings.

Later on Thursday, the Justices also convicted Matheus Lazaro, from southern Parana state. Both their convictions carried sentences of over 15 years in prison and one year and six months of open regime, or supervised house arrest.

A third defendant, Thiago Mathar, was sentenced to 14 years in prison, including 12 years and six months in prison and six months in open regime.

Brazil’s supreme court has sentenced a far-right fanatic to 17 years in prison for his role in the failed attempt to topple the country’s leftwing government on 8 January this year.

Aécio Lúcio Costa Pereira, 51, a sanitation worker from São Paulo, was the first rioter to face trial for January’s dramatic assault on Latin America’s largest democracy.

Hundreds more will find themselves in the dock in the coming months to face charges over what the supreme court’s president, Rosa Weber, called Brazil’s “day of disgrace”.

On Thursday a majority of the court’s 11 members ruled that Pereira, a hardcore supporter of the former president Jair Bolsonaro, deliberately sought to overthrow Bolsonaro’s successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, when he and thousands of fellow radicals ran riot in Brasília eight days after Lula took power.

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Thursday (Sep. 14) sentenced Matheus Lima de Carvalho Lázaro—the third defendant in the case of the January 8 putschist riots—to 17 years in prison.

It was also ruled he should pay a collective sum of BRL 30 million along with the other defendants for their participation in the depredation of government buildings in Brasília.

He was arrested on the Esplanade of Ministries on the day of the attacks after emerging from the National Congress building carrying a penknife. According to investigators, he had sent messages to family members during the riots advocating military intervention to seize power.

Based on the vote of the rapporteur, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the majority of the ministers confirmed the defendant had committed the crimes of armed criminal association, violent abolition of the democratic state of law, attempted coup d’état, damage aggravated by violence and serious threat, and deterioration of property listed as heritage.
