Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Thursday he will not attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders' Summit in the US because the Peruvian government will be in attendance.
Lopez Obrador said he will skip the 30th anniversary of the APEC summit because "we do not have relations with Peru." The president has been a fierce critic of the de facto government in Peru after former President Pedro Castillo was ousted last December.
Vice President Dina Boluarte stepped into power following Castillo's deposal and incarceration.
That ignited a wave of social unrest and protests that resulted in violent clashes with authorities with more than 60 fatalities and hundreds injured.
The Mexican government has since shown iron-clad support for Castillo and his family, granting political asylum to his wife and children.

Peru's oligarchy has always wildly abused and persecuted, ultimate violence employed throughout, from the moment the invading Spanish conquerors arrived. They despised the most recently elected President, José Pedro Castillo, a former teacher, from the moment they learned he is a Native citizen, and got right to work slandering, spreading total fabrications, attacking him relentlessly, until they were able to get him impeached and even send him to prison. The oligarchy has favored a brutal, genocidal tyrant, President Fujimori, a Japanese Peruvian, and his two aggressive politician offspring, as he was eager to serve their murderous hatred for the original Peruvian citizens. Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, AMLO, has followed the civilized path in treating President Castillo as if he is a human being, and the Peruvian oligarchs are enraged by it.
