HAVANA (AP) Four Russian ships, including a nuclear-powered submarine, will arrive in Havana next week, Cuban officials said Thursday, citing historically friendly relations between both nations and as tensions escalate over Western military support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Cubas foreign ministry said in a news release that the ships will be in Havana between June 12 and June 17, noting that none of them will carry any nuclear weapons and assuring their presence does not represent a threat to the region.
The announcement came a day after U.S. officials said that Washington had been tracking Russian warships and aircraft that were expected to arrive in the Caribbean for a military exercise. They said the exercise would be part of a broader Russian response to the U.S. support for Ukraine.
The officials said that the Russian military presence was notable but not concerning. However, its taking place as Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Moscow could take asymmetrical steps elsewhere in the world in response to President Joe Bidens decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-provided weapons to strike inside Russia to protect Kharkiv, Ukraines second-largest city.

(17,179 posts)they probably need shore leave.
At least it's not black sea duty. That can be a little hazardous, even though ukraine has no navy to speak of.
Russian warships, do go fuck yourself.

(113,093 posts)and all tjose anticommunist assholes who made such stupid decisions aren't safely dead yet. When they're not around to give interviews to the press on how we're all soft on the commies, maybe it will happen. I hope so.
They do have a tourist business, countries that are smarter than we are, like Canada and Mexico, established relations with them years ago. The tourist industry just isn't enough to make up for the loss of the sugar cane market when the USSR collapsed. Now Russia gets their sugar from sugar beets and Cuba was left with tourism and cigars and they really didn't have enough wealth to develop the former properly.

(113,093 posts)because that's what's going to happen.
We had the first steps toward establishing relations and travel for families under Obama. TFG couldn't wait to throw a hissy fit and end it. It was his thankew to the Batista Cubans in Florida who voted GOP.
They'd rather pursue a policy that failed 40 years ago than see their families, I guess.

Because their sailors would have been rolled (or worse) by criminals in Venezuela?
One thing I will give the Havana regime credit for is that Cuba is a LOT safer than certain other parts of the Caribbean. They also deserve credit for keeping the Narco cartels out.
