Fujimori is within a fortnight of turning 86
Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori will seek a third term in office in 2026, his daughter and former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori announced Sunday. Regarding her father's disenfranchisement given his numerous criminal convictions, Keiko insisted she would leave those matters up to their legal team. The octogenarian leader also faces several health issues.
My father and I have talked and decided together that he will be the presidential candidate, Keiko Fujimori wrote on social media.
Alberto Fujimori, who is two weeks away from turning 86, announced in May that he suffered from a malignant tongue tumor. He ruled Peru with an iron fist between 1990 and 2000, leading to the defeat of Maoist guerrillas Shining Path, but was eventually sentenced to 25 years in prison for two massacres of civilians by an army squadron in the early 1990s.
He was incarcerated for 16 years for crimes against humanity but was released on Dec. 7, 2023, when a pardon granted to him by former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK) was upheld by the country's Constitutional Court.

Forced sterilization in Peru

Forced sterilizations in Peru under Alberto Fujimori's government were systematic and aimed to control the population of impoverished and indigenous women, mainly in rural Andean communities. This practice was part of the state-led National Population Program, which emerged from the military's Plan Verde, initially aimed at economic recovery and combating the Shining Path insurgency. The program has been widely condemned as a form of ethnic cleansing or genocide due to its disproportionate impact on rural and indigenous peoples of Peru.
The roots of this program can be traced back to population control measures and eugenics theories that emerged in Peru during the early 20th century. These measures evolved significantly under Fujimori's administration, which justified the sterilizations as a means to alleviate poverty and improve resource distribution by reducing birth rates among the "culturally backward" and economically disadvantaged groups. Despite claims of voluntary participation, many women were often sterilized without informed consent, under threat, or in exchange for food and medical care.[1]
This forced sterilization campaign had lasting socioeconomic and health consequences in the affected communities. The program decimated rural economies, exacerbated poverty, and led to widespread human rights abuses. Efforts to bring justice to the victims have faced numerous obstacles, including government resistance and legal challenges. Although international and national bodies have condemned the actions as crimes against humanity, accountability and reparations for the victims remain limited.
Background
Population control measures, many relating to ethnicity, began to appear during the 20th century in Peru.[2] The elites of Peru adopted the theory of eugenics in the 1920s and 1930s, requiring pre-marriage examinations that would ban unions which involved individuals determined to be "unfit".[2] In the 1930s the Peruvian government actively promoted the immigration of white Europeans.[2]

(3,001 posts)Quite interesting to see support for Heritage candidates on a Democratic discussion board.
Even more interesting seeing so called Dems supporting a military junta/dictatorship over an election win for the left.
EU elections ... Left wins cause celebrations
French election ... Left wins, celebrations follow
UK election... Left wins are celebrated
Venezuela election ... Left wins are denounced
Hmmm. Weird. It's as of Hispanic votes for the left have less if any support. I wonder why. Hmmm.
