More than 1,000 mariachis belt out classics like 'Cielito Lindo' in a Mexico City plaza

Updated 11:04 PM CST, November 10, 2024

MEXICO CITY (AP) — More than 1,000 mariachis gathered in Mexico City’s main plaza Sunday, strumming guitars and singing classics like “Cielito Lindo” to end a mariachi congress celebrating the musical form.

The number of musicians apparently topped the previous record of 700 mariachis at an earlier gathering in the Mexican city of Guadalajara.

The Guinness World Records organization hasn’t replied a message from The Associated Press asking whether Sunday’s gathering broke the previous record.

The musicians, many of whom had arrived in Mexico’s capital from other cities, expressed their joy at singing in the giant iconic plaza, saying the music is a family tradition they start learning at a young age.

Over 1,000 mariachis gather in Mexico City to break world record

November 11, 2024

On Sunday, over 1,000 mariachi musicians gathered in Mexico City’s Zócalo seeking to break the Guinness World Record for the most mariachis playing simultaneously.

The event, which marked the closure ceremony of the city’s first International Mariachi Congress, gathered over 1,000 mariachis from different cities across the country at Mexico City’s Constitution Plaza, also known as the Zócalo.

The previous record of 700 mariachis was set at a 2013 gathering in Guadalajara, the capital city of Jalisco and birthplace of mariachi music. After event organizers submit evidence, it takes Guinness World Records 12 weeks on average to officially confirm a new record.

Playing trumpets, violins and other traditional instruments, the mariachis opened the gathering by playing “El Son de la Negra,” by Mexican composer Blas Galindo in unison.

However, according to news outlet Infobae, it was their performance of “Cielito Lindo” that sought to break the Guinness World Record. To end the lively music display, the entire ensemble played “El Rey.”

in Kansas City. The singer, Vicente Fernández, is a total professional, the crowd loved him so much, and he sings so well. Wow. So easy to see everyone there knew the song by heart, and I loved the unity that seemed so clear as they sang with him. I don't think I've ever seen a crowd loving a song that much, ever! It was wonderful.

Vicente Fernández must be a national favorite with millions of fans.

Great song, wonderful singer. Thank you!

There's something about it that makes it the one song anyone would want to sing as loudly as possible, over and over again! It's infectious, impossible to not be there in the forefront of your memory forever!

Whoever wrote it had the absolute magic touch. There's nothing like it!

Thank you, so much!
