Haiti - FLASH: Nearly 200 people massacred in Cit Soleil (Provisional report)

The toll of the massacre orchestrated between December 6 and 8, 2024 in the Wharf Jeremie sector of Cité Soleil, by the gang leader Micanor Altes alias "Wa Mikanò" and his men, mainly on elderly men and women, accused of having cast a deadly spell on his son by acts of witchcraft https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43805-haiti-flash-at-least-110-elderly-people-massacred-in-cite-soleil.html is revised upwards to provisionally stand at 184 people.
The Haitian NGO "Combite pour la Paix et le Développement" (CPD), which has several branches in the affected area, states in a press release that "The gang leader has decided to cruelly punish all the elderly and voodoo practitioners who, in his imagination, would be capable of sending a bad spell to his son [...] The gang's men were responsible for identifying the victims in their homes and taking them to the chief's stronghold to be executed," adding "the toll could still rise, as at least 80 people are still being held by the gang." Pierre Espérance, Executive Director of the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH), agrees, "Testimonies from communities suggest that the real number of deaths is much higher, as mutilated bodies were burned in the streets. Several young people, including motorcycle taxi drivers, were also killed while trying to save residents [...]"

"The Government condemns in the strongest terms the abject massacre perpetrated on 6 and 7 December 2024 by gang leader Micanor Altès, alias 'Wa Mikanò' and his associates [...] This act of barbarity, of unbearable cruelty, cost the lives of more than a hundred women and men, mainly defenceless old people," describing this massacre as a "direct attack on humanity and republican order"
Minister of Justice and Security :
Patrick Pelissier, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, condemns in the strongest terms the massacre orchestrated last weekend at Wharf Jérémie by gang leader Micanor Altes alias "Wa Mikanò". He urges the Government Commissioner of the capital to initiate public action against the perpetrator of this carnage and his accomplices. "Minister Pelissier extends his condolences to the families of the victims."
